However, when Buffy witnesses this femme fatale scare off a particularly nasty vampire, she begins to suspect that Xander may be in serious trouble.

To be fair to Xander and the other boys in the class, they were under the influence of the She-Mantis' pheromones. That doesn't mean that the majority of the guys wouldn't still have volunteered. Also, notice that Xander, when in the presence of a beautiful, voluptuous woman in a provocative dress, who's trying to seduce him, after drinking one spiked martini, says "Buffy...I love Buffy". At this point, he's past the "infatuation with the hot girl cuz she's a hot girl" phase and into the actual "cares about and will risk my life for her" phase. Also, we get the first clue into Xander's home life.
