Frieren: Beyond Journey's End | Ep 1/2 What a beautiful anime! So excited for this one!

If I had to describe Frieren season 1 just using one word it would be..."wholesome". It really makes you think about life, the passage of time and your relationships with other people. On another note, Jason is right about Frieren not realizing what she had when she spent time with the "Party of Heroes" (aka...Himmel the Hero, Eisen the dwarf Warrior and Heiter the priest). P.S. In case you're wondering....Frieren meets Fern when she is 9 years old. This is 20 years after the death of Himmel the Hero. Frieren then spends 4 years deciphering the grimoire for Heiter the priest. At the end of those 4 years Heiter the priest dies and she takes in Fern as her apprentice when she is 13 years old. In the episode titled, "It didn't have to be magic..." 2 years passed and it is 26 years after the death of Himmel the Hero. Fern is 15 years old in that episode.

2025-05-03 11:37:36 +0000 UTCIt's my first time watching Freiren, so I'll be together with you guys on this journey. My husband has watched it on his own, now I'll be able to talk about it with him. I cried, especially on the 2nd ending song - it hit me hard. The writing was leading us in kind of predictible directions so I was prepared and stealed for both deaths, for the meteor shower etc. But the search of the flower just for honoring the statue of the friend which was connected to the memories she had of them... It was so slow-paced, peaceful, Fern's POV added some different emotions, the addition of the local fauna and flora that had such a huge meaning in just being around them all the time... It was all very poetic, mature and beautiful. I was surprised by how good the story was, was all teary-eyed but the beautiful ending caught me off guard and I started crying. It summed up Freiren's story perfectly and resonated with my personal circumstances, shared a similar lyrics and overall message with lots of other songs I love... I just can't... The animation is good, drawings are beautiful, colorful but colors are calmer not that striking. I find character creation a strong point of the anime too - characters have many good traits but also some quirks and bad traits. It makes them more human and real. I find the character of the Himmel the Hero to be especially well done - it is very visible he had the biggest impact on all the other members ot the party and on Frieren. He saved many people and was adored by many, he was courageous, strong, kind and tender. But he had this quirky love for his own face and that comedic trait of his makes him so approachable as a character... He also seemed to have a weak spot for Freiren and his friends in general. It made him more human and less like an unrealistic hero figure. I find it a really strong point of the story, because I fell like we will see many more memories of him and how impactful his existence has been. Now, if you've made it through my essay of a comment, here's a good Japanese word that I think suits this story: - yuujin - Meaning: a friend Kanji: 友人 (consists of characters 友 [tomo] - a friend and 人 [hito] - a person) Reading: yuu-jin ['yuu' reads like a word 'you'] Word 'yuujin' is another word you can describe a friend with. You already know 'nakama', which is rather uncommon in daily Japanese language and means more of a comrade or a companion. You can hear it more in anime, especially shounen, than irl. The most common word to describe a friend is 'tomodachi' or 'tomo' (which is a part of the word 'yuujin'). However, 'yuujin' can be considered a more formal way to call a friend, with more respect for them as your companion. Thus, would be used in context of someone you have a lifetime of memories with, with whom you share a big bond, who is your friend for life. Can be considered someone more than just a friend (e.g. you can have many friends in work but you usually only have one or two really close friends with whom you share the deepest connection or have the most memories with). In this anime, word 'yuujin' was used when the Priest was telling Fern a story about the Hero. Meaning, he considered Himmel his friend for life. That word being used immediately gives Japanese listeners the context of how exactly deep the bond of the party members was. They weren't just friends ('tomodachi'), they were Friends ('yuujin-tachi'). :)

2025-05-01 05:04:12 +0000 UTCThe first time I watched the first two episodes, I think I ended up watching like five or six in one go haha. But seriously, just the first two alone hit me hard. There were some lines that just stuck with me, and honestly, I feel like everyone should hear them and keep them in their hearts. There were a few lines that really got to me: 1. “Why didn’t I try to get to know him better?” - That one just hit. I’ve felt that before. About people who’ve come and gone. It’s real… 2. “If I died without doing something, all the courage, strength of will, and friendship I learned from him would vanish from this world.” - I mean c’mon, it’s wild how they put something so deep and powerful into words, just made me think about all the people in my life who’ve shaped me to be the person I am today. 3. That scene where Heiter’s in bed and Frieren tells him, “Fern has been ready to say goodbye to you for some time now. What you need to do before your death is give her a proper farewell and make as many memories as you can.” - this one had me in tears the most, I’m not able to articulate it, this show’s got me thinking way too much about life and how I’ve been living mine. Just makes me wanna be better and love people harder while I can 🩵🧡

2025-04-30 00:39:20 +0000 UTCI just started this show to watch along with you guys and I ended up binging 10 episodes straight, it’s a great show so far, it gives me the same feelings I get playing a good RPG like one of the good Final Fantasy games.

2025-04-30 00:01:36 +0000 UTCJust the color palette and the score alone are on a movie level. This is such a good story and yes, this is a different kind of mature, we might be used to understand "mature content" on media on this side of the planet as violence, sex or not being PC, but Frieren shows us things like love, grief, dreams and the little things, and does it in a stunningly beautiful way. Just like One Piece, Frieren is a show of light and hope, in a world that constantly tells us that "we're doomed" or "the end is near". I can't wait to see your reaction to the rest of the season.

2025-04-29 22:06:49 +0000 UTCThis is one I started when it first came out and only watched the first 4-5 episodes. I'm not sure why I stopped since I'm a huge LOTR fan, maybe it was the fact I had too much going on at the time and too many shows as well. I'm glad I started it up again with you folks since the theme is hitting pretty close to home, maybe that's why I was avoiding picking up the show again.

2025-04-29 17:53:15 +0000 UTCIt's here!!! . I watched the first few episodes but am always reluctant to continue. It's like enjoying something so warm that you don't want to finish it because you’re afraid that warmth will vanish. But I think I can finish this if it's with all the nakama :). I can't wait to start this one with you guys!

2025-04-29 17:52:57 +0000 UTCI also want to point out how unusual this story is. Unlike anything else I watched, this starts where any other story would have ended. Like the title suggests, it goes beyond the end of the journey they all had together to defeat the Demon King. Such a statement!

2025-04-29 17:31:43 +0000 UTCAlso, the names of the characters all come from German and they all evoke their main features and journeys: -Frieren means "freezing" (she has a somewhat cold attitude, seldom bothered by events and people around her, also it's a reference to how her life is "frozen" in time compared to everyone else); -Himmel means "heaven" and just like an angel, his purpose was to help people out of the goodness of his heart; -Eisen means "iron", like his hard appearance and the armour he wears. -Heiter means "cheerful" and you can see it not only in his carefree character but also because being a priest, he is aware that there's a happier life waiting for him after death, no matter how hard things have been on earth. -Fern means "far away" and this could be interpreted in two ways: she suffered a lot and she seems emotionally distant, but can also signify the journey she is embarking on with Frieren which will take her far away in a bid to become a great mage.

2025-04-29 17:27:03 +0000 UTCHeather, this anime definitely arrived in your life at the right time. It's about time spent with purpose, enjoying it with who we love because time is fleeting and we must make the most out of it. Frieren is almost immortal, she lived a long life and still has a long life ahead. She never stopped to have meaningful relationships because to her 10-20-50 years are a small fraction of her life while humans grow frail during what, for her, could seem like only a few months. After Himmel's death she has to come to terms with it and learn to appreciate the connections she makes along the way. Absolutely stunning anime which, like Jason said, feels like a movie. The score is fantastic, the characters have a deep emotional impact on the watchers from the get-go.

2025-04-29 17:26:34 +0000 UTCAs I told you guys I went and binged watched frieren after you guys finished solo leveling so I could watch along with you guys and I loved the show. Very mature with beautiful storytelling so it’s right up your alley. Also it has some of the best animation anime can offer and I know Jason will geek out over that lol. You guys get to watch what is said to be some of the most beautiful anime. Experiencing frieren and Vinland saga at the same time is definitely a one in a lifetime experience. I’m so excited for this journey with you! I think frieren is classified as a Shonen but most people would agree it’s more like seinen since it focuses more on fantasy, relationships, and storytelling than your typical Shonen anime.

2025-04-29 16:55:06 +0000 UTCNot sure if you guys notice but Heiter saved Fern's life because she was about to jump off the cliff and suicide herself but Heiter stopped her by speaker to her first.

2025-04-29 16:25:11 +0000 UTCWell Frieren is a different kind of anime in general compared to what they’ve watched before; it’s a different genre altogether. I wouldn’t call it a slow burn, it’s more storytelling that anything else

2025-04-29 16:13:34 +0000 UTCFrieren is a slow burn at times but a really wonder full anime with good action and FYI - The composer for "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" is Evan Call, an American musician known for his work in anime. He has gained recognition for his emotive soundtracks, including those for other series like "Violet Evergarden." Also season two of Frieren is coming out next year I think.
