I recall Jerry Seinfeld did a bit in the early 2000s about this exact phenomenon. The Bronze medalist is just happy to get something, but the Silver medalist will forever get questioned at parties β€œSo what happened? Did you trip, not hear the gun go off, what?” EDIT: Yep, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK9rbwM3omA

They have always said it's better to win bronze then lose gold in the team competitions.

I guess there's also the sports, boxing, Tae Kwon do etc that have a bronze medal match, winning that must feel better than losing the gold medal match. Anyway thanks Jeff for making us reflect and think about the bounty we all have in our lives and the good we all do for ourselves and those around us. πŸ‘

Did the study take into account team sports? Where two teams battle at a time, semi-final winner gets bronze and loser in the finals gets silver? The mental space is understandably different in one-at-a-time sports like High Jumps, or 8 people track-running simultanously.
