2025-07-20 03:25:18 +0000 UTCSo my thoughts on the Jor’el thing. The plot against Superman in the movie mirrors what happened to James Gunn leading to him getting fired by Marvel. An uncomfortable fact from Superman’s past is weaponized against him by a fake social media outrage campaign started by people who hate him and what he represents. More broadly I think it’s a reference to the political right’s use of moral panics to foment hate and division; Luthor even described Superman as ‘grooming’ humanity at one point. Luther himself seems like a very blunt stand-in for Elon Musk, and I … think … that’s where the harem thing comes in as well. Musk has openly compared himself to Ghengis Khan, has occasionally promoted eugenics and has ties to the weird tech-bro pronatalist movement. Jor’el specifically justified the harem thing as a way to create a natural ruling class with his superior kryptonian dna just as Musk and others have justified their own creepy nonsense by claiming they have higher IQs and superior genes to the rest of us. Pa Kent’s response to this also feels like a rebuttal to how Musk and others on the right view their children. He doesn’t offer the ‘he ain’t yer daddy, I am’ argument , instead arguing that children are not extensions of their parents, have the right to make decisions about form their own values. To be clear, I don’t think this is told well. It feels like Gunn smashed Buckaroo Banzai and Megalopolis together in a super collider. Still thought it was fun. 😛
