I 1000% agree, seeing elderly break down breaks my heart!

I'm not say it's not emotionally understandable for the U.S. troops to do such a thing, but seen from a objective point of view it's wrong. We don't know exactly what the shot enemies did leading up to that. But if the U.S. men's buddy was callously mowed down mowed down in front of him by the enemy, then I would want some revenge too. I'm just saying there's always two sides.

but if you have seen friends being killed most soldiers would and did (all sides) kill out of revenge

I have never been in the military myself, but both of my grandfather's were involved in WWII. My dad's father was a navy commander on a vessel that patrolled and helped in the defense of the U.S. east coast(a somewhat forgotten front of the war). My. mom's father was a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps during the war. He retired a two star General in 1956 after a 30 career as a Marine officer. He actually started underage at 17 as an enlistedman in the army before he went to officer candidate school for the Marines. All told he had about a 40 year military career. I never met my mother's father as he died 3 years before I was born. I am named after him though.

The enemies who put their hands up were surrendering so they should not have been shot, obviously. They didn't have any guns anymore and were no longer a threat. Putting your hands up like that is the universal sign that you give up.

I guess the whole lesson we learn from the first 20 min or so is never take off your helmet.

For D-Day [June 6th 1944] (which is shown in the scenes at the beginning and is The Allied invasion of Europe, mainly Nazi occupied France), we had to invade by beach because there was no other entry point for us, except for the paratroopers that we were able to drop successfully behind the German lines. We, the Allies (Americans, Canadians, & and The British) had to open up The Western Front of The European part of the war, while The Russians had to handle The Eastern Front of Europe. Obviously this only deals with Europe. The Americans also were already in the middle of fighting the Japenese in the Pacific since December 7th, 1941.

The big metal things on the beach that like the one Tom Hank's leans on and kind of hides behind in the beginning are to prevent Allied (us) amphibious vehicles like tanks and other things from either getting up the beach or to make it harder for them to maneuver on the beach. I forget what they're called though.

What a great read of old Private Ryan's body language You had no way of knowing who he was, but you could see his survivo's guilt. And in a way he obviously isn't one of them as he's still alive. Seeing elderly people break down is difficult for me.
