Commentary on Bubbly

A lot of the time ideas for scenes pop up to mind from pictures or experiences I find randomly in my day to day life. Ironically the concept from bubbly came finding a really cute floatie at the discount section while buying groceries (no, unfortunately I didnt buy it).

Once you have an idea in mind it can be hard to put it in paper though, so searching references to cement what you want is important when drawing (at least for me). FORTUNATELY I did find a good ref at pinterest, but it was incomplete in terms of having a full body

But I really liked the angle of it!! So using clipstudio I built a model with a similar pose to test what angle might be the best (also cuz it makes it SO MUCH EASIER to test different perspectives without sketching everything every single time)

From there I tried sketching something I liked until I arrived at this!

And as soon as I saw it I knew the idea had potential so I decided to clean it up further. Unfortunately a lot of the times you need to sacrifice “coolness” to ensure the anatomy of the character actually makes sense. This is why its important when sketching to “not marry an idea” (I REALLY wanted to work with this angle as it wouldve been interesting to render and reflect the summer sky and clouds in the water below, maybe I’ll save it for another piece, but alas I had to let it go).

Once I arrived at this sketch I rendered a background for it to see how the floatie and water wouldve looked like. I really wanted to accentuate the traslucid effects floaties can have since Ive seen artwork where their shine and light effects look particularly stunning

And thats how we arrived at the YCH placeholder!!

(To be continued because its 2am and I REALLY need some sleep, I’ll finish the story tomorrow 🐕)
