2024-10-25 19:06:09 +0000 UTCYeah, that's more-or-less what I meant by "not having anyone he'd feel safe enough with to tell about the trauma." I can understand why he wouldn't want it to come out in general. It's just to the extreme degree of committing multiple homicides to keep it secret that I find difficult to grasp. (I mean after the initial crime, it's sunk cost fallacy; that much I get.) It's the "blowing up a school bus and sending it over a cliff sounds like a better idea than feeling ashamed of being a victim" that I don't get, but at least it gave us a mystery for the season. And it does work on some levels as a tragedy of unhealthy responses to trauma, a family that prizes toxic masculinity to such a degree, and a culture where victims aren't believed and don't get the help they need. It's haunting in that way, and I'm sure it's meant to be.

2024-10-25 15:14:23 +0000 UTCHe also had the trauma of his dad and brother constantly belittling him and implying he is less than masculine which I think is what fueled him to want to cover it up. The kids he targeted were going to drag him out with them, and clearly he feared more people thinking he wasn't masculine enough because of the abuse. When I tried to report my abuser the teachers thought I was lying. I felt like no one would ever believe me and it took my mom leaving a note taped to the door that the cops found two weeks after the last time she threw me out explaining she was out of the country with her boyfriend and she was sorry for kicking me out. She left me $5 and two subway tokens with a key to the apartment in the envelope. If she hadn't done that I don't think she would have ever been caught. Everyone always thought she was just such a good mom.

2024-10-25 04:13:04 +0000 UTCRe the connections - it is noted that Curly worked as a mechanic for Casablancas Sr earlier in the season. The Hart kid was the one who filmed Lynn jumping from the bridge in the background of his war movies - same kid with beaver at his car in this episode. Kendall gets the money because since Beaver was a minor he had her sign all the business deals - and he bet against incorporation since he knew Woody would resign rather than have the abuse brought to light. I had forgotten the Jackie twist - it does contexualize her character this season. Also: now we know why Duncan is still in the credits!

2024-10-25 01:50:02 +0000 UTCAs a survivor of abuse myself, I can't imagine being so determined to keep it a secret that you'd take out a bus full of school kids. Like, he didn't even have to be the one to tell; he just had to sit back and let the others tell. Instead he chose trying to get away with multiple murders. I can't imagine how screwed up in the head one has to get to think that's the better path. The trauma surely affected him, and not having anyone in his family he'd feel safe enough with to tell about the trauma (who could then get him psychological help) was surely a big factor in why he got so profoundly messed up, but it still seems extreme to me, which I guess is part of storytelling, especially in this genre. Characters who handle their issues reasonably don't make for much drama.

It's a done deal" exchange was widely speculated in the fandom as a message to fans that the show got renewed for S3. I don't remember if it was ever confirmed but the boards I was on definitely believed it. (And sorry, CW, but you were never even half as good as WB). Ok but after S3 you'll do the movie, right? I'm fine with skipping the revival afterwards but pls do the movie!
