Having just read the chapter again, there's an idea I just can't drop. Gengetsu could have learned the rasengan - Matsu taught in to the civilians in a large group, and presumably they have been practicing in the village, so if Gengetsu is the kind of person to spy on his villagers - and he might be, in some form of clone or mental takeover Genjutsu - it could end up with him defeating Mu with an unexpected use of Matsu's special skill. Do we know if Gengetsu has any skill with non-Genjutsu ninja skills?

Meant to make a post a couple weeks ago, but kept forgetting to or putting it off. 1) [the Iwa nin were practically crowing it from the rooftops] Considering that there will probably be a free for all at the end of or after the tournament while Gengetsu and Mu have their deathmatch and the Iwa shinobi were almost certainly passed the preliminary round, so their days are very much numbered. I expect them to be among the first to die when the fighting begins. 2) [let me heal that] The other villages should know about his ability to heal now. Unless Gengetsu decided to run interference here? 3) [Sumire Hyuga glanced up, and for a momen,t our eyes locked.] Typo (, inside the word moment). Also, Matsu isn’t a Fuinjutsu expert, so even if he could convince her to defect to Kiri during the fighting, he wouldn’t be able to due to her slave seal. Maybe he’ll manage it a couple years down the road during the 3rd Shinobi World War. 4) [he announced as a pulse of chakra shot out] I fully expect this to come back to haunt them later on. Whenever Matsu eventually gets targeted by a group of Hyuga, he’s going to use the seal against the branch members and then solo the main branch member(s) that were commanding them. 5) Narratively, I think we’ll get to look forward to seeing fights from Han, Midori, Idate, and Sayuki once we get to round 3. However, out of all of them, I think I’m looking forward to Idate’s fight(s) the most. I really want to see the spectator’s reactions to a proper rasengan. Also, speaking of that, I’m expecting the Iwa genin to have been briefed on that technique by the ninja that escaped Matsu several chapters ago and for them to be very wary of the Kiri genin they face in the tournament. Relying on earth release armor would be a Darwin award for them in those fights. 6) [Oh, they’re just so predictable.] I know that Gengetsu would choose killing Mu over staying alive, but I can’t see him dying during that fight or in an ambush after it. He’s a powerful and cunning shinobi that is holding all the cards at the moment and I don’t see a week being enough time for him to finish training his successor. 7) [I tumbled along with it spotting schools of fish, whales, and sharks that began to circle. ] I thought that Matsu would go off on his own to get a summon contract, such as the Chameleon contract scroll that got left in a castle somewhere. It looks like Gengetsu might have him sign the Clam scroll instead.

They talked about the Uchiha benefitting from the competition, but how many jutsus did Matsu copy? Back before he made Jonin he could a jutsu after seeing it twice. Now with how many jutsus were used in the exam, especially with how prideful uchiha are, he must have SO MANY new jutsus. The amount he stole! I wonder if he can actually use them? He probably took the Water jutsus when he walked by the other clan compounds, now the question remains if he could use all teh other jutsus. Does he have the control and chakra. We usually only see him as a taijutsu specialist with how he usually fights Kaguya shinobi. Will we actually see old school Naruto bullshit ninjutsu battles?

Just realized, but is the 8 gates do line up nicely with the early stage of cultivation; qi gathering usually consists of opening/cleansing 10-ish meridians, then foundation condenses the qi and improves the body, then core formation solidifies qi and gives more magical abilites and so on.

Poor Matsu. It's like fighting Mysterio from Spider-Man: Far From Home. What's real? What's Fake? Did you manage to overcome the challenge or just allow the enemy to lull you into a false sense of security, only to pull the rug right out from under you. I absolutely love just how terrifying Gengetsu is in this fic.

There have been multiple hints that Matsu is developing towards Cultivation without realising that is what he is doing. First noticed when doing the cleansing and he almost twigged then that he was essentially cleansing impurities from his meridians, but he got distracted before finishing the thought. Then he later had a thought about imbuing his body with chakra on a very deep level, i.e. basically body refinement. In a conversation about the pathway cleansing and how no-one else can sense the network it seems to be implied that it's not actually chakra involved. He's probably not far off being able to open/create a Dantian and properly refine Qi. He just needs to finish realising what he has been doing this whole time.

Poor Sumire. Pretty sure that Matsu’s gesture was the first expression of human warmth she ever had. I always had a soft spot for the Hyūga branch, I mean, how can you brand your own family with a slave mark to induce pain and control over their lives? That’s really fucked up. If Matsu ever finds a way to block and clean the mark, he’s going to have the biggest part of a very powerful bloodline so grateful and indebt that I don’t doubt they’ll end up defecting in his favour. Well, thanks to Minato, Matsu now knows how to do the Hari Jizō. I remember that was one of the jutsu he wanted a long time ago, I think. And also, the handsigns for the Kuchiyose no Jutsu if he didn’t have it before. Man, really proud of our boy, Kenta. He ‘baited’ Akuma wonderfully, and though it was mainly his own arrogance that did him, it was still Kenta’s ability to make use of it that brought him victory with a faulty Rasengan. Poor Matsu, the reward for good work is more work. Or in this case, the Training Montage from Hell™. I can wait to see how strong he’s going to become after trading his pointers with Gengetsu. Also, Matsu’s right. Naruto, the setting, is all about cultivation.

I wonder whether Matsu is trapped in a Genjutsu or whether he was transported into a summon's realm. Knowing Gengetsu it might be a mix of both. Matsu might be trying to dispel the ocean which is real, but have his senses mixed up, so that he thinks he's breathing air when he's underwater or some messed up shit like that. Gengetsu's summon is the clam, so having an ocean environment makes sense. Most people probably assume this to be an illusion, but Matsu being unable to break out of this obvious change in scenery makes physical transportation a possibility. This would be the perfect opportunity to get Matsu a summon, especially after we just saw Minato use his. Matsu could get added to the clam contract now or after Gengetsu dies. If Mizukage doesn't wanna share, there might be other beasties sharing the space with the clams. I wonder what other things Gengetsu could teach that would fit into Matsu's toolkit. Genjutsu would be the obvious choice, but I don't think a week is enough to make a big difference in that discipline. One potential reason that Gengetsu is warming up to Matsu might be his own ego --> "This is the kind of generational genius it takes to have a chance at one-upping me". The greater Matsu is, the greater his own position as Mizukage, which Matsu openly covets, becomes. His comments on the Yuki clan head support such a line of thinking. His contemporaries have all been beaten by Gengetsu already, so only Matsu remains someone with an unblemished record who brings new ideas and accomplishments to the table.

No. Asuma is the youngest son. This is presumably Konohamaru's father who is gone in the actual series. Hence Jiraiya's emphasis on him being lucky for getting the check to his ego in the exams vs in the field where he would canonically end up dying.

My favorite ongoing fanfic is "The Outsider's Resolve". Updates drop every Monday. It's about a MC who doesn't have many things going for him, and he treads an alternate career path to the one we're familiar with from canon. I don't want to spoil, so I'll just say, the story has a better focus on the things you'd expect a village of mercenaries to be engaged in than most other fics. "Dreaming of Sunshine" was pretty good, but discontinued. There's still more content than a lot of finished stories have. It goes through all the early years and stops somewhere around the time when the Akatsuki get active. Considering the extensive existing story and not ending on a giant cliffhanger, I consider it a complete reading experience. It's mainly a retreading of the familiar canon story, but the MC helps the main cast (-Sakura) out with their growth and emotional issues. Think of it as "what if Sakura was replaced by a mature and competent teammate". Orochimama also deserves a mention. The MC is already very strong from the beginning and can act upon future knowledge, mostly one-sidedly stomping the opposition. The story's focus is a mix of village-politics and troll shenanigans. The premise can be summed up as "what if Orochimaru had a conscience ... and embraced his feminine side?" At this point, the story has largely derailed from the original one, but the author mentioned that the plot is now around Orochimama Shippuden.

Gonna be honest I'm happy that Gengetsu is aware/figured out the plot to have him die against Mu and I really hope that even if they do clash that Gengetsu survives. This last scene with Matsu and all of their previous interactions are just great. Plus it just wouldn't feel right if after all the worry that Gengetsu has caused Matsu he'd be killed off without Matsu's direct involvment.

I like the idea of Akuma. A future Hokage that was cultivated from birth and likely died a genin on some unimportant mission. Reminds me of all the idealistic fanfics where Hiruzen raises Naruto to be a Kage and does not factor in how sheltered that existence would be leading to an over confident character. Part of me hopes Matsu teaches Minato the Rasengan to ensure the original character had it while the other side feels it would be neater if this demonstration just fast tracks him reverse engineering it alone.

As always I love it when red riot gets updated however I was a little surprised by Minato and Jiraiya's reaction to the rasengan as I would have thought Minato might recognise its similarities to a jutsu he is trying to make but I guess that has not happened yet.
