Monster of the Month REWARDS for June 2021!

This month's monster and minion was the Cave Gypsum Giant and the Excavator Kobold Minion.  I ended up separating them out because they ended up looking SO different. The reason for this, I suspect, is because I did ALL of the color work for the Gypsum Giant in the 5 hours right after I got my second COVID shot. I had been drinking electrolytes like it was my job that day, and maybe that was part of it. I ended up finishing it all in just one sitting. (I felt like the shot had made me superhuman, ... and then the next day I felt like a ton of bricks had fallen on me). The style has some a little unique too it, and that is because I worked on all one multiply layer, using a brush set to multiply. (So multiply on multiply)

In the end, I think what I came up with for this monster was really interesting, but it does have a different feel to it. Something a bit like watercolor and ink.

I made several new brushes while working on it that I think you will really like. In particular the All-Purpose Rhino has been my default brush for the past month, and is the primary brush I've been using for the Faerie Queene paintings I have been doing on Twitch. The Gypsum Ink and Gypsum Pencil are other drawing brushes that I used for our Warcraft 4 Orc design on our dual stream with Dave Greco. You can find all the brushes for the month here:

The Kobold Excavator turned out a lot more like the others, and was a more straight-forward painting experience.  Since it was more straight-forward I have decided to use it for our process guide this month:

I hope you enjoy these 2 new additions to the series!

Hey thanks Javier!

Justin Gerard

I made a new brush that helped a lot. (In the Gypsum Giant brush set) Mostly it was just using the brush then careful attention to my reference images to get the details right!

Justin Gerard

how did you achieve that effect and texture on the crystals ?

LordofTempests (LoT)

These are amazing! I love both of them! Nice work!
