The OCTOBER CREATURE CHALLENGE: THE HAMPIRE
PROMPT:
The Hampire: An ancient terror from the forests of the old world. It was said to have once been a wild hog, whose tranquil, sunlit forest territory overlapped that of a certain rare species of bat. On moonlit nights this bat would leave its cold perches in high ravines to feast on the blood of the peaceful creatures of the forest while they slept. After a time, the hogs began to change, as the bites from these bats imparted a dreadful intelligence, will, and unnatural hunger upon these creatures, changing them eventually, into the dreaded… Hampire. After centuries, the other hogs disappeared, and now these once sun-dappled forests are turned to darkness, and all who travel these parts must be wary of a creature in the night which, as it is told, is possessing of animal cunning, inhuman strength, and an unquenchable hunger. They can live forever, and even if one is found dead, it is said that a few drops of blood can restore it whole. Yet, they share the same weaknesses common to their kind, such as being burned to ashes in direct sunlight, an aversion to stakes, and a distinct preference for mushrooms in their spaghetti, instead of garlic.
