Look up the time period in Japanese history called the Sengoku period aka Sengoku Jidai. This, more than other periods of Japanese history saw upheaval after upheaval and a lot of misery in the lower (non samurai, daimyo etc) classes. But even a child born into the Samurai class would be sent to battle by age 13. And that’s the average, not taking into account emergencies or times when …well, there weren’t enough 13 year olds 😕 They call this period in Naruto history by a similar name, the Warring States period (because that’s literally all that seemed to take place…both in our universe and to a seemingly lesser extent on the series.) Ps. Children would be given Boku, practice swords often either of bamboo or some sort of wood before they even learned to hold chopsticks. And by 7 they used real wakizashi swords (the shorter of the 2 swords samurai carried, the other being the katana.)
