Silence of the Lambs Live Discussion (Rerun)

Hey Catlin, my sister and I own a Air B&B in Charleston RI

John Benvenuto

My perfect attendance died last night, but hopefully I never have to miss another movie discussion. I was attending AEW Dynamite, but I know some of my spirit was with you all and hogging way too many of the questions and comments as usual. The two basic notes that I was going to bring coming in were a.) I love how the beginning of the third act seemed to directly influence the Saw II twist and b.) I love the way we had these frequent zoomed back and forth conversations with the shots just framed directly around their heads. Out of the near 6000 films that I've seen, I don't think I've ever seen another use this technique so frequently and effectively. It's such an intimacy creator for the viewer, and it's interesting how that creates different effects for the viewer being placed in her perceived head state, whether Clarice is talking to Jack Crawford (mostly respect and duty), Hannibal (a level of respect, yet distrust and fear), Dr. Frederick Chilton (disgust and impatience) or her friend Ardelia (support and kinship). I'm about to watch all of this now. The answer to your early question in this stream is about who compares to Hannibal as a horror villain is another SAW reference, John Kramer. Creepy and brilliant intellectual that totally commands the conversation and plans steps ahead of everyone. Someone just called it out as I finished typing this so I'm leaving it. I also wanted to throw out my take on the whole horror vs thriller thing. The reason that I class something like Longlegs (with a similar main character and plot type) as horror and The Silence of the Lambs as non-horror is in the pacing, mood and tension of the films. The Silence of the Lambs has GREAT tension during its action set pieces (the elevator part, the third act, etc), but by and large, is a dramatic/mystery crime procedural that doesn't utilize tension as its bread and butter. The film is very economical and doesn't draw out most of its scenes, with really good pacing. It's mostly shot and directed as an antithesis to the way that horror is, despite containing horror-type villains and horror levels of disturbing content. I need to stop my comment here so I don't comment on everything in the stream for pages of text. :D
