【Silver】Making of a wood block

This time I would like to explain how to draw [wood block], one of the four blocks mentioned in the painting course!

First of all...

Before drawing the wood block, prepare the white box this time.

This white box will serve as the base for the wood, so be sure to clean up the shape to some degree!

Next, separate the layers and fill the top with color. We recommend a low saturation color at this time.

↑upSwitch the filled layer to a multiply layer and this is what it looks like! The color has become wood-like.

Paint over the top.

Let's create another new layer (normal) and add lightness and darkness to the front and sides. The sides should be brighter as you go down. (Reflected light)

At this point, lower the opacity of the pen to 70% and paint. (I dare to leave some unevenness in the paint.) You may have more success if you choose a color that is a little more saturated on the dark side (the side) than the others!

This time, the top surface will be painted with a thin layer of reddish color.

Drawing in the grain of the wood

The grain of the wood gives it a wood-like appearance at once.

At this time, choose the color of the grain for each surface.

This is how the color looks like. It's a small difference, but that little bit makes a big difference to the appearance.

Fill in the highlights

Highlights can be drawn in to give a convincing three-dimensional effect. At this time, do not make the highlights too bright. (Bright highlights and reflections can give the appearance of varnishing.)

The highlights should also be given a choice of colors for each location.

In this case, the corners are the brightest. Make sure that the highlights on the light side are brighter than the highlights on the dark side. It is recommended to check the screen in grayscale to make it easier to see the difference between light and dark surfaces.

Finally, draw in the details.

Blend in the wood grain color and any floating highlights. If there is anything you want to add, draw it in at this time... and you're done!

▼ Gif video of the process!

It's a pretty analog way to draw, so even if you don't have paint software, just mimic it with your paints!

Stay tuned for the next making of the film!
