David and Snow fought the evil queen for between six and eight years. James is dead and has been for a very long time. No dead person can be in the real world. Only living people were cursed. David woke up, the memories of Charming were gone, but the new memories of cursed David were not yet active because he was more dead than alive when they were cursed. With the windmill, the cursed memories were unlocked and he is now, like everyone else, the cursed personality that Regina wanted them to be.

Everything that happened in the enchanted forest is real and is the past of these characters. Storybrooke was frozen in time for 28 years, and things only started moving forward when Emma decided to stay shown by Henry saying the clock had never moved in his entire life, but it starts ticking the moment Granny gave Emma the keys.
