It'd be like not understanding why old Tom and Jerry cartoons had stereotypical depictions (answer is obvious). You get what I mean? Also Popo is based off the Mahakala, not a stereotype.

2025-04-16 21:42:27 +0000 UTCAm I the only one who is kinda weirded out by the stereotypes? I mean its funny and i was laughing but the announcer voice was pretty edgy. That's not even mentioning the way they drew the black woman when Goku and Krillin were trying to find the stone, i feel like that crossed a line especially because she was just supposed to be a regular island resident. I usually give Popo a pass as he Isn't a human but i feel like there wasn't a good reason to draw her that way.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Dragon Ball (and also inspiration from some Bruce Lee movies I believe) is what inspired the famous "tournament arc" trope that we often see in anime, which is pretty neat. And we also see from this point on that Toriyama starts to shift the story away from a gag-like manga into a more typical shonen-type anime we often see nowadays

Roshi said there was no point in teaching them any techniques or special moves unless they have the combat experience to use them (hence entering them in the tournament)
