Kendrick Lamar - GNX | ALBUM RECAP (EARLY ACCESS)

Comments

I’m guessing most people got the concept that this album featured a lot of old school samples that represent what he would have heard growing up and also tracks you’d play riding around in the GNX in Compton. Dissect Podcast talked about this in their review. Dot was known for freestyling in cars with the homies, the snippet at the beginning of the Alright video is another example of him highlighting it. The concept of the title track was that. Him and his squad in Compton freestyling high AF in the GNX. Also ties into the name Grand National ‘Experimental’ with the experimental ignorant LA beat. Also the funny double entendre on the hook of ‘Hi (high)! Have you ever been a joint and you know it?’ The track grew on me over time. The features were good especially Hitta J3 sliding on that beat was impressive. As for the GNX snippet video, that sounded like an intro track and a trap beat at the end… I have a feeling GNX is disc 2 and disc 1 will be darker and more of a classic Dot album feel. Most GNX tracks were written in the last few months and I’m sure he had an album in the works before Like That. Let’s see if the Deluxe album happens in February. Physicals don’t ship till then…

They should react to Snoop’s Gloria off the new album: Last Dance with Mary Jane 😂

I don't really know where to put this so I'll put it here: I think you guys maybe should show some more love to YouTube and put out more full album reactions there. As someone who first discovered you through the Eminem - Kamikaze album listen back in the days you were doing it in the car I kinda want other people to have the same experience I had. Just watching you guys going through the same emotions I had, almost felt like a shared experience (although one-sided 😂) - I don't know the balance exactly, of course you want there to be some reason for people to subscribe and all, maybe more cut down versions on youtube and uncut versions here? I don't actually know, you guys just brought me so much joy over the years that I just want you guys to earn as much money as possible. I have no clue how all this works and maybe you guys already found the perfect balance, if so then that's awesome. Also, unrelated but also related: I really miss you guys listening in the car 😂 the studio vibe is cool and all, but there was just something dope about that vibe. Anyways, I hope you get this, man, hit me back. Just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan.

I'm really glad you both highlighted and further explored Gloria and how he was able to pull some amazing lines out of a heavily explored metaphor. Maybe it comes from the different ways he sees his art? His analogy has a lot more depth and nuance than what I feel as if I have seen in the past. Most have compared it to a positive relationship or romance but Kendrick has had a varied one with his art that brings not only a more realistic comparison but one that also brings more detail to the metaphor. I would love a video exploring other tracks like this.

Kamasi Washington, outside of being an outstanding artist in his own right, also worked on TPAB and DAMN.

Bay Areaaaaaaaaa, there is a lot of bay influence in Kendrick's music

enzo

My Top 4: Hey Now (I absolutely love the nod to Super Hyphy and Keak da Sneak), Luther, Heart Part 6, and Wacced Out Murals.

Arie

Yes. Please do a video on personifications. The main one I think about is usually Common.

Arie

My absolute favorite thing on the album is “Bitch with him and some bitch with him. That’s a lot of bitch.” It’s hilarious. Also love the nod to Biggie with the king/siblings/children line.

Arie

PLEASE tell me you guys will be listening to the new Mac Miller album coming out next month!!!

Xenolithic

LMAO. I'm mad you asked who produced 'TV Off'. MUSTAAAAAAAARRDDDDDD!!!

Nah thats one of my fav moments on the project too

Benedikt

Dope Video. I really enjoy your recap videos. I agree with gnx being the „weakest“ Song on the project, even tho its got one of my fav lines of the project but i might be reaching here. He says „Who showed you how to run a blitz? Tell em Kendrick did it.“ First: im not too familiar with American Football but apparently its a strategy that forces the Enemy quarterback to make a mistake or fumble a pass by applying pressure (referring to Drake) Second: the strategy itself refers to the Blitzkrieg by the nazis in WW2 and also might refer to how Kendrick suddenly started the beef with his Verse on „Like That“ and how he ran Drake over with dropping tracks back to back. Now for the third meaning i might be reaching heavily but „the blitz“ could also refer to the aerial bombing of british cities by the nazis and in anticipation/response to that the british evacuated the children from urban centers and send them to countryside so they would be safe. Considering what Kendrick accused Drake of plus the diddy situation and kendricks message throughout the last months being that he wants to keep the children safe or to elevate them, makes this a crazy bar to me. But i dunno…

love this content

Gaurav U

“Hey now” switch on the 2min mark is crazy good. Am I the only one?

Miguel Sady

Oh shit yeah you’re right! The more I think about it the more a video on personification songs would be amazing, so many great examples

S.

Echoing other comments, loved this video, I know a lot of us have been internally digesting the album in a similar way. It’s interesting to me that it isn’t my favourite song but the chorus of Luther has been on loop in my brain for days. Also the falling cadence of ‘I don’t know how to make friends I’m a lonely soul’ is magic, he really said THIS is how you pay homage properly. I love how he made this album sound new and different but simultaneously nostalgic. first listen felt like being at a 90s house party in a big way.

S.

I feel him on the end of man in the garden. Had the same skips as Darae.

Tre M

Dope takes fs. All of them are valid arguments can't complain on any take. However peekaboo is a bop. Fav verse has to be reincarnated 3rd verse, the energy is crazy and even the tie in to Lucifer and Father is so dope. Please do a video on the cole drops since u guys already heard them all. A review on each album would be fire. There are some bonus tracks of forest hills drive which we'd love a reaction to. Peace 🍃💨

This makes me wanna listen to the album another 50 times! :) Love your honest opinions, even about Squabble Up!

Robert Luong

Last thing I wanna say is I agree with all of your top songs being some of best Kendrick songs we could have gotten but being from the Bay I also just love the slaps that much more haha. My favorites are all the slaps hey now, tv off, peekaboo, squabble up.

Gurmehar Singh

the producer actually posted a text on his ig story of kendrick asking for the beat 3 days before the album was released lol

bunniescult

I'm so glad yall did a recap and super glad you broke down Gloria a little more. I personally feel like that song is one of the most special concepts off this project. I know you read the lyrics but SZA's outro was so deep: Gloria, I want to take you to EUPHORIA Bitches want but they not strong enough (everyone wants to be the GOAT and yield this power but they don't have what it takes) I heard they talking we notorious If someone talking on me I see you You seem me Both see what we want (Poeple downplay kendricks pen, doubt his pen and his intentions, SZA is singing back to Kendrick AS HIS PEN, saying fuck all these motherfuckers, I see you and you see me, we both know who we are and what we do together. It's us against the world and I got you for life.) Such a beautiful fucking song. I know what it is to love and dedicate yourself to a craft. To want to be the best in your field and yourself. That's why I have always resonated with Kendrick's music.

Darla

As for GNX (also my least favorite), there’s some rumors about how they just got the beat a couple days before release and the groups of the people he has featured have been beefing recently and it’s escalating and so Kendrick has that song as another way to ease the tensions.

Gurmehar Singh

Dope recap. Well thought out. You guys have been top tier for years. Rated the album a solid 9. GNX is the only song i not the biggest fan of but get it fully.

Jacobi Craig
