Cole has been my favourite artist for years and all this recent build up and energy in his lyrics, the mad feature run was so enjoyable to listen to as a fan. He’s really backed himself in so many of his verses and it felt like as he says himself he was hitting his prime, so his confidence was worthy.The Climb Back felt like the start of it for me. He’s given all this talk and it felt like he was ready to take on anyone, and as a big Cole fan I was enjoying this run so much man. For him to do that just makes no sense and I’m gutted he did, thinking of The Fall Off now no matter how good it might be, this has overshadowed it.

Unfortunately overshadowed his incredible performance with a bunch of live features (Central Cee, Benny, etc) Vibe I got from the crowd was that people get it, Cole is tryna stand above and focus on his craft. But I’m pissed that we won’t see him clap back at Kendrick from a pure BARS perspective because he’s finally that good that he might have a solid chance to knock him down. Given just how frankly weird this was, and how he was talking, this feels like he saw the response to 7 Minute Drill, and tried (poorly) to pivot. He may genuinely & probably has some those “raw feelings” he described about Kendrick, his spirit and his work on the diss (both can be true) but I think the Like That diss really caught him off guard leading up to his roll out and he just fumbled. In that state of being unprepared he let off a diss that by the general publics standard didn’t work. I believe he thought it would, which is why the 180 was so severe and strange. Because he was definitely in his ego bag, even on that EP. That didn’t just go away. He was feeling himself. Even on the diss I think he thought it was good and I don’t think this is just about damage to his spirit. I think the reason he had “two sleepless nights” is cause in the midst of this big moment for him he saw people weren’t exactly ecstatic about his work especially in the big media spaces and he got freaked out. Then he went all the way to the other end of the spectrum in his sort of old J Cole bag to try to soften it but ultimately just melted down. Which is a shame, cause while the diss wasn’t amazing it wasn’t so bad that he couldn’t wait for a reply and then regroup. Just a really really brutal self inflicted wound

That’s the only one that felt like there was something there. Aside from that, the whole song cole praises his peer in kdot and drake but he’s still going to say he’s the best. You should always feel like you’re the best but you know how humble cole is. He said he was the best the most cole way possible by acknowledging his peers as well. Now, I still feel like kendrick didn’t diss him at all. for weeks i’ve been waiting for someone to show me where kendrick popped off on him. i don’t think he needed to respond but it’s clear outside noise got to him. FINE ! if that is the case i think he responded too early. finish the tour with drake, drop the EP, finish dreamville fest head the 2nd metro/future album and then come to decision on if you REALLY wanna do this because there is no turning back. and he’s seeing what happens now when you try to. if anything i would’ve just temperature check kendrick and see if it was a certain way he was feeling if yall so cool like he claims they are. hit him up, call him, meet up, etc. just to get a wage of “oh nah he wasn’t shooting at me” because the diss made it seem like he was still unsure if he wanted to do it and had no real plan of attack. I understand why he said what he said cuz that TPAB line was a good jab because it’s something that most people have said. However people in the comments were taking it too far. We just mentioned that production was not it but people took it too far. Based on that energy, I can see why he backed down.
