We initially had a session to do this reaction. We ended up spending that 2 hour session listening and breaking down "Mural"...ONLY Mural! This wasn't our intention, it just happened. We then decided we'd do the album in parts, with that Mural reaction/breakdown being part 1. Unfortunately that footage got accidentally deleted.
So during this second session we decided to go through the album with more of an intent on enjoying it rather than trying breaking it down.

What blew my mind is that Lupe made this album with the intent us listening to the tracklist backwards. That's first song is resurrection, the second song is about being a baby(adoration of the magi), then growing up in the ghetto (deliver) meeting crazy ass friends (chopper) so on ...... If you listen to it in reverse

The hacker group Anonymous hacked into their databases and got ahold of information that would hurt their label. And they basically told them to release Lupe’s album or they will leak everything out to the public. And thats how we got Tetsuo and Youth.

But the song it lets you know that although Lupe raps are very conscious, thats the life he grew up in, Lupe is from one of the worst parts of Chicago but listening to his music we forget about that. He talks about how he keeps guns although a lot of his raps are about anti violence and keeping peace, he has to stay protected. And how all of his childhood friends are no longer with him either dead or in jail. Its more straight forward, theres no hidden meaning in chopper. If you go on genius you’ll see people break it down so many ways but Lupe said it himself theres no hidden meaning in that song its just the raw grittiness of the Chicago street life

Also for what it’s worth, I would never claim to be an “expert” at catching Lupe lyrics just by ear and not doing the research, but I have a process that works like 50% of the time haha.

There are so many subreddits talking through different meanings behind the album, different ways to play the album, so much more. I could talk about it for a week, and just seeing u guys listen to this for the first time brought back so many memories. This is truly Fine Art. (Speaking of which - he also painted the album cover!) Appreciate you guys for recognizing and highlighting Lupe. Would love Drogas Wave next, also incredibly elite

If y'all wanna do the deep dive on Mural to get another lens on what it's all about (and again, this still won't give you everything), I HIGHLY recommend the Dissect podcast episode on Mural. He has two, hour long episodes that are dedicated just to Mural, so y'all weren't fucking wrong with the 2 hour thing. It elevated Mural from a top 10 song of all time for me, to maybe the GOAT song in hip hop, and in general for me. Thank y'all so much for doing this one.
