The Expanse 3x12 Reaction

this is the end of book 3, and season 4 should start along book 4.

If you read up on the non-linear scaling of the Kardashev civilizations ( a metric we categorize how advanced a civilization is ) you end up exactly on that line of thought leading to the same place. Its really scary.

His character is a masterclass of writing. Obviously damaged to a very high degree but super complex with this constant hint of tragedy in there. His character reminds me so much of Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. Lots of very similar undertones. ( childhood trauma, extremely flawed personality, exceptional fighter, etc... ) To your point, he even told Holden when he was pinned by the Protomolecule that he was really grateful to him not having to wonder whether he was fighting on the good side or not. Such a great character and I really have to credit the writer team on the show ( besides Ty and Daniel who wrote the books and was also part of that team on the show ) for adapting the books so well. Wes Chatham played Amos perfectly and the thing he does with his eyes is outstanding. They've dropped quite a few lines because Wes can convey them without saying anything, it's all there on his face there is no need to say anything. Not only he played it really well but it show how well he understood the character. Easily one of my favourite in the show.

Whats interesting about Amos and Anna.. is that Amos has always been in survivor mode.. People in survivor mode tend to seek out people who can benefit them and teach them in areas they may be weak in. I think that is what is happening. Its like he is aware of his deficiency and sees that strength in her.. And is latching onto it to learn. Much like he latches onto Naomi and Holden for their moral compass.

The monologue from Holden is absolutely haunting… “any more than anthills we pave over.” This is one of my favorite episodes. Imagine a civilization so advanced it considers you ants. And then that one that got wiped out by something ever more powerful. Gods being wiped out by gods…

Some people would tell you that Amos doesn't know good from bad and they'd be right. He doesn't, at least in terms of the decisions he makes regarding his own behavior. But he does know there is a difference and he wants more the anything to be good, to be on the right side. He can also recognize good in people and this is so clearly having a profound affect on him in his conversations with Anna. She is without judgement, malice or guile and so easily and naturally kind and decent. I'm not sure he knows what to do with all this. It will interesting to see there relationship going forward. 😎

I feel like this is a pivotal episode. You learn so much but the characters are still scattered in their interpretation of what’s happening. Holden was such a hero but now they don’t trust him. It seems true to life that people base their entire opinions on a person’s most recent perceived actions, judging without really checking on the truth of the info. We are so quick to condemn.
