Her Favorite Day

 The open, crisp autumn breeze. Seeing people other than the handful of "I'm somehow a real-life goblin" confidants. And of course, the candy. After ten months near-constantly cooped up in her apartment, it was a breath of literal fresh air for the one day she was wholly, unambiguously able to step outside not only without any raised suspicion, but with heaped-on praise for her appearance. She'd been called a witch, a troll, and a goblin more often than not—the latter being most accurate, of course, but she couldn't blame the incorrect guessers.

It was disorienting, almost nostalgic, walking down sidewalks from a lifetime ago while barely coming up to the waist of the average adult. But that was part of her life now and although she never found any answers, she'd come to terms with her new self. At least she could somewhat blend in with the average trick-or-treater...so long as she held the bucket or bag to tactically block her chest.

All in all, unless November and early December had some special surprise she'd magically forgotten about, Halloween would be her favorite day of the year. It was with more than a gram of sadness that she had to return back to her apartment.

The only thing she'd do differently next time, she thought, was read up on face and skin makeup, to make more convincing lies for the questions she'd be asked ad infinitum next year...or at the costume party or three she'd be crashing on the weekend. (Would this be a valid costume for a New Year's Eve party?)
