Rich N*ggaz is arguably one of my favorite cole songs ever. Sooo good.

I think you have to be young and crushing hard on a girl that isn't interested to really feel Power Trip. That was an anthem for me back in the day

you should react to the video for Crooked Smile. It wouldn't matter if its faded at the bottom bc we've probably all seen it - I just want to know what you think.

I get why you prepare newer, more mature Cole to this Cole. Make no mistake, he’s much better at rapping nowadays. But part of why his longtime fans love him and this album so much is because we grew up and matured as people right along with him. Its like he’s speaking for our experiences in a way

Your criticisms of Cole's lyricsm were common at the time of release, and made him a pretty polarizing rapper. The public was split on his talent (and still is to a degree), but a lot of his maturation came in later projects. This is album definitely feels like an awkward transition listening to it now. I still feel very nostalgic about it though.

Not a bad listen but im not sure if some of the lyrics aged well. Glad we get to see Cole progress though.

This is cole's best album to me especially the themes the inner struggle with sin and fame and how that played a part in his development as a man moving to New York trying to get on and the experience he had already had from his hometown mixing with his new life the album is beautiful and his rapping imo is the best as a whole album outside his mixtapes the hunger the pain in his voice you don't get that from cole anymore

Listening to call backwards is weird. Jon doesn't even know the lil voice that was playing at Forbidden fruit. It was literally J.Cole's signature similar to Logic's young sinatra voicemail skits. Jon definitely needs to start listening to mixtapes, From J.coles Warmup and Friday Night Lights to logic's Young sinatra collection.

To think that I was actually listening to this more than GKMC when they both came out at the same time. Now it's completely the opposite. Haven't listened to this album since 2013, yet GKMC is a record I still play today.

The drop at the 36 min mark was so 🔥 it made Jon disappear for a second

Sideline story is the only thing worse than this album. Easily one of his worst records imo. I'd rather you listened to Friday Night lights mixtape than this

So much nostalgia with this album, but you're right in that it's less interesting that his newer projects. Lot more up and down from song to song, and some bars really pull you out of it in 2021. But overall, a great step in his growth with a lot of gems, so cool to see your reaction!

Definitely agree with you Jon. This record doesn't hold a candle to Forrest Hills and later records. Even his early mixtapes were better imo. But it's still incredible and necessary to see the drastic transformation. I liked this album when it first came out because I was at a similar age to Cole and stage of life, but I haven't returned to it since. Lacks a lot of depth, but it's good to come back and see the early seeds being planted.

Yea I think it is probably weird to hear this one after hearing the newer ones first because he evolved so much in the years following this. Still my personal favorite though because of the memories attached to it. I got to meet him at the age of 14 in VIP Meet and Great at the concert for this album, still my favorite rapper and an amazing guy. Glad you got to listen to it!
