So one of the workshops we did was a private tour of a high end gentleman's club.
Strip clubs aren't that common in The Netherlands, the concept is more well-known in America.
Most likely due to the fact that it is so easy to get access to sex workers in the Red Light District so going to this kind of place is EXPENSIVE.
So people usually go for the experience itself.
We got to chat with a sex worker and she shared all her stories about her profession, the industry and how it works in the club.
From her tricks, to her preferred client ethnicity, to how it works in the rooms.
It was VERY cool to experience behind-the scenes.

Interesting that sex brothels there are basically like strip clubs here. Except they still are brothels in a sense. Kind of like a strip club and a sex brothel (in American terms) combined. Also interesting about the different cultures that sex brothels will turn down. I totally get it though because safety first and foremost. Especially the cleanliness!

But sadly, there are certainly places that exist that are still like that... I really hope to get more involved in advocating for the rights of sex workers in the work that I am doing. I have been learning so much over the past 3 years since I started! It's a continuous wealth of new information.

2025-05-12 13:07:56 +0000 UTCSo happy to hear that the sex workers have such autonomy and control -- like working just 1 day a week, and being able to leave at any time. Many years ago, I read "Brothel: Mustang Ranch and Its Women" by Alexa Albert, M.D. The author did a public health study on the sex workers at the Mustang Ranch legal brothel in Nevada. My recollection is that each sex worker would work for stints of 2 weeks to several months -- with only the most profitable workers being able to work for just a single week at a time. But what I found alarming was that during a stint at the Ranch, each sex worker had to literally live at the ranch in her "room" that she also used to service her clients, and had to pay rent to the Ranch (which was not cheap). I think if they left early during a stint (like say on day 10 out of a 2 week stint) -- there was some large financial penalty that would be imposed. All that seemed so exploitative to me, and a means of "legally" enslaving a sex worker through financial dependency on the Ranch. Despite that, the sex workers the author interviewed seemed to be happy and enjoying their work, etc. Not sure what the situation is there today and whether things have changed at the legal brothels in Nevada (never visited myself) The situation at the Amsterdam brothel is the way things SHOULD be set up, giving them autonomy and control over their schedule and finances, etc.
