He assumed that the Fire Nation couldn't have killed his people because in his eyes "the only way to an air-temple is on a flying bison". That, and he's a 12 y/o kid. Facing the reality that his entire people were genocided isn't easy

The Air Nomads obviously Tibetan and Shaolin monks and Water tribe of North and South pole the Inuit, though weaponry and their ships are more Polynesian. You will meet other water, earth and fire tribes who are based on Meso-America, Africa and Australia too though.

2023-09-08 22:03:21 +0000 UTCAang basically explained in episode 2 why he was so OP. "So, I guess you guys have never fought an Airbender before, huh?" Basically, no one nowadays has combat experience against someone like Aang, so of course he's going to make them all look like fools.
