Change is coming in August
Added 2023-05-31 06:00:02 +0000 UTCAugust 14th (three months from now) will mark six years of the Molten Sulfur Blog. I’m probably going to institute some changes to the blog at that time. I don’t know what those changes will be yet, but I’m leaning towards taking a break for a few months and then going to posting every other week (and no longer taking posts from Archive: Historical People, Places, and Events for RPGs).
I haven’t mentioned this on the main blog yet (and probably won’t until August), but y’all deserve an earlier heads-up. Obviously, there will need to be some changes on the Patreon. For example, if I take a break, I won't charge you money during that time. I just want to reassure you that I’m thinking about how these changes will impact you too.
Six years is a long time. That’s as long as I spent in undergrad and grad school combined. That’s as long as I spent in the Navy. In those six years, I left the Service, got married, got another degree, moved states twice, bought a house, worked four different day jobs, ran three Kickstarter campaigns, won one major award, and got nominated for three others. During this period of enormous change, the blog has been one of very few constants in my life. But I think this period of constant change might be coming to an end, and I should probably figure out what I want out of the blog moving forwards.
When I started the blog, I did it thinking that this would be a way for me to take the campaign prep I was already doing, put it on the internet, and maybe gain a readership I could point at my Kickstarter campaigns. None of that happened. I pretty quickly pivoted from writing about traps and puzzles and dungeon layouts to writing about real-world history and folklore. It’s a lot of fun to write, and people seemed to enjoy it! And the idea that I’d be able to point readers at my Kickstarter campaigns was technically correct, but in practice I’ve gotten very little Kickstarter traffic from the blog. Nor has the blog helped sell my back catalog of books all that well.
So why keep doing it for six years? Clearly writing this blog has fulfilled some sort of need for me. Today I find myself in a new state (Minnesota) in totally different social and emotional circumstances from when I started doing this. I don’t currently know whether I still need the blog as much as I once did. I think there’s value in pausing to reassess. I’ll keep you posted on what I decide.
If you have any thoughts on possible upcoming changes, I’d love to hear them.
As always, thank you for your kind and generous support. I am, and have always been, deeply grateful.
V/r,
Tristan
