Congrats on missing the entire point.
His statement here is "I can be as abusive as I want and still not be accountable for it because I have all the power here." Emiko was only daring to talk back to him at all and explain why she *rightfully* doesn't trust him because she thought she *finally* had some leverage--*ANY* leverage--in their dynamic...and he just took that little bit of confidence she managed to scrape for herself after years of abuse and crushed it to make an example of how resisting his whims is futility.
You're making the same mistake he is--confusing not being as bad as he could be for actually being good. He is giving off the *appearance* of benevolence in the hopes of catching more flies with honey than with a swatter, but don't get it twisted: his little "might makes right" intimidation speech makes it clear that he is *VERY* much still the villain, here. He's just trying the approach of least resistance instead of being the hammer that everything looks like a nail to, that's all.

I know we are supposed to be Team Emiko here … but she was out of line and needed a reminder that he was nothing but surprisingly nice to her family and her. Also, a harmless man cannot be truly virtuous in holding back … the fact that he is capable of being the monster she remembers makes him not being one around her family so ugh more meaningful. Thirdly: *he* still is her father, and god knows what she inherited from him that we do not know oft hat we do not yet know about.

Likely didn't wanna trouble himself with actually giving a reason behind it, so I guess you could say his answer was scaring the hell out of Emiko...
Good to see his giant form after all this time however :D.
Nice work as always!

I think it's pretty much as it looks - he's an abusive asshole, but he's old and retired. He wants her to know he COULD ruin her life, if he really wanted to. Having a Tengu for a father seems rough.

I have even more questions now. We now see he still has the power that he is feared for, he could have taken Emiko back at any time and tormented her husband yet he is saying he wants to leave it all in the past. What is his true goal here?
