As for Potocki, I don't exactly know if there's a weaker word than coward, or something similar to "justifiable cowardice" if you can even call it that in english. On a funnier note looking into it, I came across the word "pusillanimous," synonymous with coward and just deep dived into 20 minutes of pusillanimous etymology arguments, fiercely debating whether "pussy" is derived from pusillanimous - apparently it's heavily in favour that it's not!
