My interpretation is that it does not matter how we interpret Richards actions, for him what he done was the ultimate evil. We understood that he used drinking as an excuse to put the blame of his actions on something other than himself because how could a killer hold his daughter (in his own mind). Johan basically tore away the band aid and confirmed his worst fears.
