Course of Temptation Dev Diary #71

Hello friends! The weekend is nearly upon us, and it is time for another dev diary.

I've gotten some preliminary work done on Greek houses — some of the underlying code and data, and defining them as locations that you can walk around and do stuff in. In many ways, they need to replicate the functions of the residence hall, though actually living in one will be... let's call it a medium term goal.

Realistically, many campuses want freshmen to stay in the dorms for their first year, and it makes some sense to adhere to that in a simulationist way. But also realistically, many people who play this game don't play one character for a whole year, so I'm reluctant to outright gate off too much content until later years, since it means a lot of people won't see it. I'll have to give it some thought, and perhaps survey the community a bit.

I've also started on the March update this week. I'd like to deliver more of the monthly update up front in early access, rather than delivering a bunch of the new content and features in the week between early access and public release like I tended to do in the leadup to 0.6. I think you will like this better too, and for this month that just means starting on it a bit earlier. So that's what I've been doing!

A major goal for this update is to refresh and add to the basic event sets. The events you get while walking around, going to class, going on hangouts, and so on are some of the most frequently seen, and the majority of those events were written pre-release or in early updates. So I think it's time to add some fresh content to those.

A related goal, helped along by the new dialogue system, is to add a bit more nuance to romantic relationships.

Prior to the relationships update, NPC behavior was largely driven by the "desired relationship" algorithm. This algorithm looked at an NPC's inclinations and attitudes and basically determined whether their goal was to befriend you, hate you, date you, or fuck you. In this implementation, NPCs who were forward and confident were more likely to want a friends-with-benefits situation, while NPCs who were more kind or shy were more likely to want a romantic relationship. This assumption — that if you were on a date, you were with a less forward NPC — informed a lot of the writing around hangouts and other interactions at the time.

Since the relationships update, while the desired relationship is still a large factor, the system has also become more nuanced. It's now entirely possible to get a forward, even crude NPC into a romantic relationship with you. So, it's time to update some dialogue and events to reflect this, so that an NPC's behavior doesn't appear to abruptly change the moment you get into a romantic relationship with them. I know this is a particular bugbear for some (Hi Dunan!).

In addition to accounting for this, I'd like to account for the reality that not every partner is perfect. Getting your bully to agree to date you should not immediately lead to the ideal relationship. They should still be a little pushy and not always consider your feelings. In this fantasy world of ours, "I can fix him/her/them" will remain true, but it'll take a little more work than before. Depending on their inclinations, it'll require a higher Romance attitude before their "bad partner" tendencies fade away.

I'll be doing more of this to finish out the week, hitting several areas of the game. For the next week, I also want to do a little headliner feature for the March update. I have a few ideas, some kind of a mini-job or activity... like making videos for passive income, or a one-on-one cam chat site for fun. I'll think about it over the weekend, and feel free to offer your own suggestions as well!

After the March update is out, I'll have a solid chunk of time to sink into the Greek house update, where I expect I'll get well into defining the storyline structure and writing some specific events. But I'll tell you about that as it happens.

Lastly, I still hope that in addition to the current dating style where you just meet at the agreed location, there could be a style where the PC and NPC meet up and travel to the date location together. For example, if the PC and NPC decided to watch a movie, they would meet in front of Chicory Hall and walk to the town theater together. The reason I hope for this addition is that I'd like to see random events happen once or twice during a date. For example, the PC and NPC could bump into another NPC while walking together, or encounter delinquents who harass the PC, or if the PC is dating a 'bad' NPC, he could show off his 'hottie(PC)' to people...

I find the PC's admirer in this game very interesting. Currently, there's only one admirer for the PC, but I hope there could be multiple. It would be great if NPCs with specific Traits (Inclinations) could fall for the PC and become admirers. I'm hoping for this because I want to see how admirer-type NPCs react when the PC is in a romantic relationship with a 'bad' NPC. I'd love to see scenarios where a 'bad' NPC might act possessive in front of the PC's admirer, like touching the PC intimately - fondling their chest, slapping their butt, caressing them - or saying lewd things to the PC. It would be interesting to see the admirer reacting in various ways as they watch the PC being harassed and exploited by the 'bad' NPC.

I also hope that 'bad' NPCs wouldn't break up with the PC even if they found out about the PC's infidelity. Because for 'bad' NPCs, the PC isn't an object of affection, but rather an object of possession, a trophy, and a sex toy. PC's faithfulness might not mean much to them, right? I hope they would react in diverse ways according to their inclinations. For instance, if they are easily angered and violent, they might become violent towards the PC for having sex with another NPC without their permission. (Here, the PC is like a woman who can't leave him even though she's being abused by him.) Or, if they are perverted, they might get aroused by the fact that the PC had sex with another NPC and demand detailed descriptions of the PC's sexual encounter with the other NPC. Or, if they are possessive, they might publicly humiliate the PC as punishment. I actually think it would be even better if 'bad' NPCs would make the PC sleep with other NPCs – sort of like pimping them out – depending on their needs. For example: A 'bad' NPC could lend his girl, the PC, to his friend to sleep with in exchange for repaying a debt. A 'bad' NPC could bet a night of sex with the PC against his friend in a wager. A 'bad' NPC could enjoy girlfriend-swapping with his friend (who also has a girlfriend), taking turns sleeping with each other's girlfriends in the same room. There could be many other dramatic situations besides these, right?

about tattoos and piercings... I think bad romance NPCs are perfectly suited for this tattoo and piercing content. Besides the PC voluntarily getting tattoos or piercings, I hope there would also be a route where the PC gets tattoos or piercings involuntarily, led by an bad NPC. Wouldn't a 'bad' NPC want to clearly mark his territory on his bitch? Just like branding cattle. These kinds of tattoos, even without her taking off any clothes, ignite a huge imagination about the reason and process behind her getting them. Just like in this short video, if the PC walks down the street showing off tattoos like that, she will become an object of scorn for other virtuous women, an object of vigilance for women with boyfriends, and gossipy NPCs will create gossip about the PC. Furthermore, it will stimulate the desire to conquer in many men. For NPCs who knew her innocent self, it will give a sense of shock and despair. And above all, for the NPC who owns her, it will satisfy his desire to show his trophy(PC) off. I've always liked tattoos that are visible even when wearing clothes, like tramp stamps or thigh-hip-side rib tattoos. But of course, the most amazing thing would be a bad NPC tattooing his name on the PC's pubic area. Because even if the PC escapes from the bad NPC and enters into a romantic relationship with any man in the future, they will all know who the PC belonged to in the past. One more thing... If they are 'bad' NPCs, I hope they would force their tastes on the PC. Making her wear the clothes he wants her to wear, get the tattoos and piercings he forces on her, and become the depraved woman he desires.

Another thing to consider is keeping up with her menstrual cycle. She can buy tampons or pads and keep track of when she gets her period. She may decide to abstain from sex on those days and she may stain her clothing. Also, if she's late she can do a pregnancy test. Lots of possibilities.

I feel that we need some scenes where your roommate walks in on you masturbating. We also need to be able to inspect and punish our subs. Just requests, keep up the amazing job you are doing.

I wish there was cigarette smoking in the game. The MC would have to keep a steady supply and could take cigarette breaks at times to increase "relaxation".

Also, is there a way to change the relationship with BFF from "open" to "polyamorous"? I noticed that there is an option to change it to "monogamous" but not to "polyamorous" when they chat with each other after they make the initial commitment.

The BFF turned boyfriend story needs to be done in a sensible matter. Right now there is hardly any movement for a very long period regardless of how many dates (hangouts if you prefer) or late night dorm visits. The changeover to boyfriend/girlfriend happens finally but without much warning. I prefer some dialogue between them and some advancement with each date/encounter which leads up to their first sexual encounter.

Interesting to hear that most people frequently make new characters. I've been playing the very same save that i started with many updates ago. With all the build up that exists for skills, relationships, ingame memories, i prefer to keep that progress instead of resetting it. A possible design solution for your dilemma of the greek housing living could be to lock behind some specific progress. Ideally it would be tuned that during a 'regular' playthrough it would unlock after roughly a year (Maybe the year ending giving a chunk of progress to facilitate that better) but if someone is looking to specifically unlock that, they can do so much earlier by 'grinding' the progress for it. If many are in case starting fresh characters with certain content in mind, giving them the option to directly work towards that sounds encouraging. I'm wondering if it is possible, when romancing fixed characters (aka the Harasser comes first to mind) to keep them "unfixed". The trope of turning someone bad into someone good is certainly appealing, an option to specifically not do that might be worth exploring. Keeping a sort of "toxic" relationship going due to the nature of that partner. In any case, the preview you've shown is quite encouraging, looking forward to the fruits of your labor and glad to see your attentiveness towards older content. It's a well known pain in this industry that as the game progresses, especially the start and old content of it can be of much less quality than newer additions. Glad to see you're frequently paying attention to raise floors of your game.

I agree with making something to work towards in later years, but that it should be advances in current storylines including what ever storyline you include for the Greek houses.

I for starting the Greek content in year one and not being able to move into the Greek houses in later years. As you develop content for later years, other housing options should open up. Like off campus housing or the ever elusive Bancroft Lane. My experience in college was that different people seek different experiences. There is already too much content to chase after in any one year. That is a good thing that brings a more realistic college experience to the game. One thing you might include once you expand into 2nd year and beyond is not allowing freshmen to live anywhere but the dorms. I have found a few times that my classroom admirer lives in the apartments which makes weeknight dates less convenient. Love the game.

On a side note I wouldn't mind being able to alter the attire of teachers eg all the female teachers seem to wear white blouse & pumps & mid length skirt it maybe nice to put a pencil skirt on one even if that was the only change or a tight shirt for the hunky male teacher etc. This is an idea because I'm trying to crack onto a female teacher who my character finds attractive & maybe she could subconsciously wear a pencil skirt one time in class

Greek house content would definitely start in freshman year. I was more pondering when to allow the PC to actually live there.

yeah you usually rush a Greek house in freshman year. I'm not sure why they would need to be locked behind a year threshold, since it feels that is actually more antagonistic than helpful. I don't know how many players even make it past year one to be honest. The promise of something interesting later, by itself, isn't often compelling enough to convince people to stick around. Sometimes it is, but not usually, at least in entertainment when people can choose other things instead. If however the argument was that there could be a taste of the Greek Content, staggering it so that a heck of lot more drops 2nd year when you move into the frat/sorority house that is different. Because players would still get a sample of it and a promissory note of more to follow if they wanted to pursue it. Put another way, the Esports/Swimming/Cheerleading/Football content starts first year, and so do Bestfriend-Lover as well as Classroom Harasser and Roomie content, and in fact so does Quicky Burger, River Rat, and adult cam. I'm not sure why Greek House content would be put into its own category of delayed content.

Being able to move into greek dorms would actually be a great option for anyone who isn't interested in the roommate storyline! It would also help in making it make a bit more sense for your best friend to tell you where to meet up for a hangout/date.

For me, having a post-freshman content would actually motivate me to keep playing. I lose the will to go on when I see that year 1 2 3 is exactly the same as one another. Tho I think it depends on whether you're in for a quick experience or a long lasting playthrough (which I am the latter)

Hmm, if it's something that is locked until year two, I doubt the vast majority of people will ever play that long and get to experience it so it seems like it'd be wasted effort. For me, I think I've only had the opportunity to be able to experience the harvest festival maybe three times. All but once did I ever get to check it out because it was so long into the game that I was on autopilot trying to achieve other goals and the one time I got to play it it was over so quickly, I didn't think there was anything enticing about it. I certainly know I wouldn't make it a whole year to see some content I've been wanting since I first played this game :(

I'm definitely on the side of keeping greek house content exclusive to later game, which would kind of be like hitting two birds with one stone and not only check off this roadmap item, but also bring the game closer to the year advancement milestone too! And if you wanted, a suggestion is that you could also add a couple small events regarding the greek house in the first year to introduce players to the fact that it exist at all, or to give players who never get very far in game, a taste of what they could have if they just made it to their sophmore year or so (much like real life in a way)! Regardless of what you decide, I personally love what you're doing so far! And relationship reworks, yay!!

One more thing, breaking up with a boyfriend/girlfriend is too easy right now. The current method is to simply notify them of the breakup through conversation or phone call, and it's immediately over. But real breakups are not this easy. I hope the breakup process is more realistic. When the PC tells the NPC she wants to break up, I hope the NPC tries to win her heart back. He might gift PC flowers, create romantic events to try and win her over again, or simply follow PC around and beg. If the PC's willpower is weak, she might eventually fail to resist the NPC and continue dating him. If bad boyfriend (girlfriend) content is added, I hope this breakup process is more intense. e.g. If a bad NPC judges that he has played with the PC's body enough to be bored of her, he might dump her as if he had been waiting for her breakup request. But on the contrary, a bad NPC might absolutely refuse to let go of the PC. After all, our PC is the best trophy on campus and perfect sex toy. He might blackmail her with photos or videos taken during sex, or perhaps just do what he's good at... use sex to make her realize once again who she belongs to, that she is a slave who cannot escape from the addictive pleasure he provides.

Yay! Is the “bad boyfriend/girlfriend” content finally being added? I'm really looking forward to it. While I'm excited for romance content with bad boyfriends/girlfriends, I think it's important to consider how the PC gets involved with bad NPCs in the first place. I hope there are various ways a bad NPC approaches the PC after targeting her. Whether it's through seduction, setting traps, or using other tactics. (It would be great if there was a scene where PC's good friends warn her about the bad NPC in this process.) Anyway, unless the PC is a fool, she will quickly realize that the NPC is bad. Because he doesn't respect her, abuses her, treats her like a sex toy, or tries to exploit her. Nevertheless, if she continues a romantic relationship with him, there must be a valid reason. Perhaps the bad NPC is an incredible sex god, and the PC is addicted to the pleasure he gives... (In this case, shouldn't the PC not be able to get much satisfaction from sex with other NPCs?) Or maybe the bad NPC holds the PC's weakness and dominates her...

I Love the idea of having something to work towards [them being for year 2 and up] ie Greek Houses, it makes people... well.. me want to play the same character for four years. Edit: I think Greek houses could be for 2nd years & up and then just add cheats for players that don’t wanna put in the effort.

These days it probably would. I revised it around the time of the relationships update, and now it's mostly based on attitudes and their relationship preferences (like whether they just prefer casual hookups). It's mostly dialogue and some event text that needs updating.

Having an OnlyFans style source of income sounds amazing. Is it possible to code in an IRL style channel? Have people watch the character go to the gym, ride the bus, shower, eat, and change clothes. Then spice it up by allowing viewers to pay money to have a speaker emit different sounds and phrases? That would be amazing.

Will there ever be an option to change age and/or choose what year you start in? It'd be cool to have an older character deciding to return to school, start as a sophomore, or have a milf classmate.

I try to play through a full year. Sometimes the updates come too fast, and I feel like I want a new character to take full advantage. I find that going beyond the first year has few challenges, since the character is quite competent in most areas.

For those of us that are into that I hope we can keep those partners bad 👀👀 One of the reasons I don't finish a year in the game is because I expect nothing to progress and everything to repeat so maybe something you can unlock in a second year would add a motivator for playing that far?

idk how coding works so forgive me if this would be too difficult to do, but maybe you could add a cheat that opens up the stuff that’s meant to happen in later years so people that don’t play for too long can access it early? if that makes sense?
