Poll: Development Focus for 0.7

Hello! I'll try to make this quick. I'm still working on the upcoming February update, but in the meantime it's time to start narrowing down which roadmap item(s) I'll knock off for the next major update.

As you know if you've been here a while, major updates are usually worked on over a few months, while smaller monthly updates are developed in parallel so that we don't go too long between updates.

I have a few major contenders in mind for the 0.7 update. There are a lot of things in the game that currently end where roadmap items should begin. For example, being caught streaking by campus security doesn't do much because crime and punishment isn't in... failing all your classes doesn't do much because academic consequences aren't in... there's a whole winter holiday with no snow because seasons and weather aren't in yet... you get the idea. Finishing one of these major systems would tie up some loose ends.

So, let me sum up these poll entries and give you an idea of what might be scoped into them.

The scope of these options is somewhat tentative. Several of them are combining more than one roadmap item, which is pretty ambitious! Even with monthly updates coming out, I don't like major updates to take forever, so once it's looking like we have a winner, I'll outline and plan the scope in more detail. This is just to give me an idea of what the community prefers at this point.

You can select more than one option, so if you're torn between two, just pick them both! Every option here will remain on the roadmap, we're only deciding what's prioritized for this particular update.

Sad to see weather on last place, i voted for that and school advancement

Matt

Good ideas. What about another one to tutor other students to collect some more money or other experiences? ;)

I'd also like to see the River Rat become a date option.

Chris Sommercorn

Is voting time over? I can't seem to click on my vote. 1/2 Crime and Punishment / Storyline update - these seem to be the most content for the least amount of coding. I'd personally say save the coding upgrade (seasons and background) for later

I often see scenes where the PC initiates a booty call with an NPC, or vice versa. I think it would be interesting if, when the PC goes to their room, there was a third person waiting inside. They could immediately demand a 3P encounter from the PC, catching them off guard. If the PC doesn't resist strongly enough, the 3P could happen, with one person engaging in sex with the PC while the other films the scene. They could even take turns. It's also not easy to escape from these bad boyfriends or girlfriends. Because of blackmail? No. Because of mental dependence. You could call it gaslighting...? Bad guys and bad girls are very good at subjugating their partners. Eventually, after a certain point, the victim can't even think about escaping from the abuser.

These are university students, mostly in their late teens and early twenties, a time of raging hormones and often, immature relationships. All the couples in CoT treat their partners like mature, considerate people in their 30s and 40s. This is a bit unrealistic. As young university students, they should often be able to get annoyed or sulky with their partners for no reason, and treat them like a punching bag for their stress. I don't know if you had these kinds of people at your school, but at mine, some male students would compete over who had slept with the most women. They would even share sex videos of these women with each other. It's a crime. But nobody got punished. It was a good university, and I remember they were medical students, so I suspect that's why they weren't punished. There were even guys who would essentially pimp out their girlfriends, such as offering them in exchange for borrowed money. One of the most shocking things I witnessed was in a student cafe. A guy was groping his girlfriend's breasts under her shirt while casually chatting with his friends. He was treating her like a trophy, openly fondling her in public. She was clearly uncomfortable and embarrassed, but whenever she tried to resist, he would curse at her and threaten her. This happened over a decade ago, and I have no idea what those people are doing now. But it illustrates the kind of terrible things that emotionally immature people in their early 20s are capable of. And things have only gotten worse. Just last year, I saw a news report about a man who was arrested for blackmailing his girlfriend with a sex video after she tried to break up with him. They were both university students. He used the video to force her into becoming a sex slave for him and his friends. After months of abuse, she finally found the courage to report him to the police, but he retaliated by uploading the video to an adult website, ruining her life. I'd like to see more diverse relationship dynamics represented in the game. Right now, the couples in CoT seem to represent the most ideal scenarios. It would be incredibly lucky to find a boyfriend or girlfriend like that in real life. Because there are always bad guys and bad girls in reality. You might get a good partner, or you might not. Because there are so many selfish, perverse, and violent people out there. And when you combine that with the heightened sex drive of young adults in their early 20s? It's a recipe for disaster.

I’d pretty much rank mine the same. I’d probably put Background NPC’s in 4th though or maybe even 3rd. I’m personally not to worried about the weather but I do like that it will make it more realistic and add events depending on weather. I hadn’t thought about the background NPC’s before reading the poll. I always favourite the story characters and use customise character to maybe change a thing or 2 like style now and then. I do favourite and get to know other NPC’s but not as interested in them as a lot of them blend together without character images and always having to read description. A lot of them eventually get removed depending on traits they get

Gary

All of the options in the poll are appealing, but the [Background NPC simulation] feature is particularly exciting to me. In my opinion, one of the biggest shortcomings in CoT is the lack of distinct personalities among the NPCs. Despite having different Traits, it's difficult to perceive any real differences in their behavior or attitudes. While there are some variations in the sex scenes, this feels rather limited. A prime example is when you establish a romantic relationship with them. Whether the PC is dating the most caring and romantic NPC or the most selfish, rude, and abrasive one, there's hardly any noticeable difference. They all act similarly affectionate. The same applies to friendships as well. While the SM relationships are present, they feel insufficient. It's simply a matter of SM as a relationship dynamic, isn't it? In reality, I observe a wide variety of couples around me. There are couples who are caring and affectionate towards each other, couples where one person unilaterally uses and exploits the other, couples who treat their partner like a trophy, and even couples where abuse is present. It's heartbreaking to see how the abused partner is often too dependent on the abuser to break free from the cycle. Considering that CoT is set on a university campus where young adults attend, it's reasonable to assume that a significant portion of the NPCs would be emotionally immature. They could very well be selfish, violent, cruel, and surprisingly inept in interpersonal relationships. This is precisely why I previously suggested scenes where a partner might attempt to film a sexual encounter without the PC's consent, or suddenly introduce a third NPC for a 3P scenario without prior discussion. I also believe that the PC should be influenced by the NPCs they interact with. NPCs should have their own preferences, and these should have an impact on the PC. Perhaps a PC who was once innocent might gradually become more promiscuous, or a PC who preferred modest attire might start wearing more revealing clothing. Finally, I think it would be fantastic to see groups or factions emerge among the NPCs. If the PC becomes close to a particular group or faction, their relationship with opposing groups or factions could naturally deteriorate.

If I were to order my preferences: 1 - Storylines - I really appreciate that you intend to go back and refine already covered ground. But, also, my favourite part of the game are the special characters with unique storylines. So whenever there's more of that, I'm happy. Even if it's going back and adding new events to old storylines and special characters. 2 - School Progression - 2 and 3 were almost a toss-up, but this one gets the slight edge for me, simply on the basis that the whole premise of the game revolves around the University setting, so fleshing that out feels important. 3 - Crime and Punishment - This feels like something that could lead to more storylines, as well as the fleshing out of the campus security officer as a special character. As noted in 1, that's something I'm all for. 4 - Weather - It's not the big ticket item that'll draw crowds, for sure, but it seems like something that could add variation to the general gameplay, as well as pad out some of the other mechanics, like clothing. 5 - Background NPCs - I'm certainly in the minority here, but other than the teachers, I ignore the generated random NPCs. I only care about and interact with the special NPCs as long as I can help it. So for me, this is just hallway decoration. But I know this is something other people will care strongly about, so - grain of salt.

James Rabbit

I’m looking forward to all of these. Was hard to pick just the 2

Gary

Given these 5 choices I'd have to say: Yes, please.

I'd probably start out with the weather being quite temperate through fall... too much cold weather would be a drag I think. We could start the player off with a light jacket if it was going to be a necessary expense early on otherwise. I'm thinking I would have some events that hit your stats a little when you're too cold/hot, and probably something that increases Relaxation decay while you're uncomfortable.

Anarchothaumaturgist

Dynamic NPCs - ones that develop to reflect interactions with the PC and perhaps even with other NPCs (eg teachers reacting to unruly students, football coach reacting to players not practicing hard, etc etc) and developing inclinations/behaviors as a result would be just purely awesome, and add an absolute ton to both freshness and replayability! Love the game, it is awesome as it is, thank you Anthaum for all this work, and if it is possible to add NPCs in effect having lives of their own, at least to some extent, that would be amazing!

oldranger

I get the basic idea behind the weather, but there's two thoughts. First, I feel like the initial clothing offering might need an adjustment given when the game starts, how much jackets/coats cost, and the rate you can make money. As is, stuff like computers take a really long time to get and they're needed to progress a few different stories. Second, how would the game incentivize people dressing for the weather instead of just wearing shortshorts and a tanktop in the snow? Some sort of carrot/stick approach? Bonuses when dressed properly and debuffs when not? Do maybe you get sick with the flu if not?

For the post graduation content, sounds like a wonderful opportunity for a large DLC/sequel as you now focus on putting that degree to work in the big city!

Down in the dirt

School advancement would be amazing. Progressing in clubs as you are a sophomore on would give more storyline options you can gate behind year in college. I’m sure everyone wants the juicy story bits expanded, but a system to progress the biggest part of the PCs story is necessary to build storylines around it for good pacing. It’s pretty immersion breaking to repeat the same year. Plus where’s the motivation to seduce or be seduced by professors for grades if it doesn’t really matter? Haha

Side thought: Would love to see the "I'll give you $(spoiler amount) if you..." tipper at the bar remember who the character who did it was and have something of a mini arc - assuming it doesn't already, the is.

Afterthoughts - could switch residence to one of the apartment building, still having the player commuting to and from campus. Maybe pick someone as a post graduation roommate (or have a plot line where they can get a much cheaper room with a bad roommate as in the dorm). Also, potential flip on the crime/punishment idea, could have a career option as campus cop? Plenty of opportunity for awkwardness if/when the player's streaming, past or present, comes up as a faculty member or law enforcement....

This is brilliant!

I really want so much to have progression of majors before I get to my sophomore year. I tried to stop playing until the class progression update because I'm so close to sophomore but I can't keep myself away from the game! I'm probably just going to reset my save when the class progression update releases cuz I really want to start playing again.

Tokyo

For the Crime and punishment option I would suggest to not just have the option to get into trouble yourself, but also have NPCs get into trouble. Sometimes it feels to me like the game focusses more on things happening to the PC then what they can do (understandable with consent issues, but still sometimes a bit frustrating)> Another thing I would hope is that the police don't fall primarily in the Bad Cop rolls. in my own playthroughs I've noticed the cops tend to be leaning towards being bullies, which is something I don't feel very comfortable with if they get an actual authorative roll. I also tend to cheat it out of them.

Arcus Caelestis

I have no idea about the coding requirements, but it might make it easier for you. I have noticed you do like to tackle big things (and manage to, which is SO impressive!). The only question is what does happen after that second year. Does it then loop to the beginning of the second, or the first? Or do players get a choice?

Arcus Caelestis

Hey been awhile since I posted. Still loving the work you've been doing and what can I say "I want everything" always pops in my mind when I see polls for this game's development. If I had to choose I think a working weather system and a crime/punishment system are the two I'd like to see first. I'd like to see weather because right now there is very little reason to have more than 1 outfit outside of required items for like work or sports/workout. A working weather system would encourage buying things like outerwear to keep warm or might be more compelling to dress down during hot weather. Crime and punishment would be nice to have as well as another way to potentially make money and a reason to keep grades good. I do think it is a little easy to rebound from not turning in an assignment or failing a test. A quick favor or two and I can keep A++ across the board. Also at a certain point (unless I change settings to make it harder) I can usually finish all my assignments and studying right before class. However, it does leave it open for me to do other things in the game. Give and take I suppose. Also an idea for post graduation would be working at the school. TA, Councilor, or maybe even teacher. Not really interested in the post school arc just yet, but there could be options to keep the PC around the school area.

NBDCipher

I hadn't considered a one-year-at-a-time approach but it might be an idea

Anarchothaumaturgist

Another thought about year progression is simply doing the second year? The sports/clubs should probably get new content for a new year.

Arcus Caelestis

I’ll admit I want the crime and punishment one cause it’d be awesome to date one of the security or the police. xD

Sieg Warheidt

I was going to suggest those myself. I'm also not sure what degree you get after college? Bachelor? Continue on for a master? I don't know the Amrican system too well. Another option is going for another major.

Arcus Caelestis

I like that idea. Having this remain in some sense a college game even after graduation would be a good way to handle it I think.

Anarchothaumaturgist

thought re: what comes after graduating - aside from existing job paths, something campus based like coming back as a TA, sport coach, grad school, or lecturer might be an efficient way to make use of existing gameplay frameworks?
