Papa Jo Jones C Jam Blues Drum Solo 1957 1

This is my first time transcribing the great Papa Jo Jones. The performance is from The Nat King Cole Show that was broadcasted October 15, 1957. I've seen someone's video with transcribed sheet when I started to study. On that transcription, I've found a lot of parts that were different from what was actually played. So I decided to fix it by myself.

Here is the first half of the solo. It starts with very fast tempo compared to the original tempo of the c jam blues. He uses the highly skilled technique right here. By using cross-rhythm, he uses the half-note triplets of the original tempo as the new tempo for the drum solo.

Right after the fast swinging hihat, he starts the 3/4 phrases. On this solo, he plays it for 6 bars long, but it seems this phrase is used as some kind of intermission to the next cross sticking phrases.

I'm really not sure if that quarter-note quintuplets and quarter-note triplets are played intendedly to be so, or he just played out of tempo as keeping the tempo on his foot. Anyway, to make the sheets, I thought it's the most accurate to use write as quarter-note quintuplets so I wrote so.

When he plays the snare by changing the tone by using his left hand, I needed to show the tone difference on the sheet. So on that specific part, all the notes are for the snare and the higher note means higher pitch with closer left hand to the finger, and same goes for other way around.

Every Jo Jones drum solo is different, but there are a lot of same particular phrases or phrase combination. There are so many complicated phrases but once you got it into your body, then it could be very useful phrase to expand the story of the drum solo.

Thank you for reading. It will be finished on the next half so get ready! Keep Swingin'!
