Designing the Other: Aliens on Film

Will try to finish one more video by the end of the month...

I'm tempted to do one about the literal fucking nazis... talk me out of it...

Designing the Other: Aliens on Film

Comments

I'd be down for literal nazis and especially how we seem to try and avoid using them more and more these days.

would also be interested in a video about nazi portrayal

mizushimo

Would also be interested in

mizushimo

its kind of why im wary of her doing it. Everyone expects an anti-trump rallying cry so that we good people can defeat those bad people. What we are likely to get instead is a depressing history lesson. Example: Werner Von Braun teaming up with Walt Disney, only a decade or so after he had been running a slave factory building the rocket bombs that destroyed London.

Don Bright

I'd be interested to watch a video on Nazi media portrayals.

Sarah Jesness

Minor thing, but thank you for using clips from the original E.T.

Rodrigo V. Perez

I am so up for a way we portray Nazis as I feel that its important for us to explore the concept more. My view is we otherize them a lot (cartoonishly so) to avoid admitting how human they are and how we can end up doing the same horrible things.

Piper Malone

Me too.

Gil

...I would actually love a retrospective look at Nazi's now. I had not realised how ingrained my deep-seated fear of the far-right and Facists was until this year. I've lost count of the amount of times I've listened to Chaplin's Great Dictator speech this year.

LL

I will up my pledge from $2 per video to $5 and keep it that way if a literal fucking Nazis video comes out. Who's with me?

Sean Murphy

How about *literally* actual fucking nazis? Like the actual contradictory attitudes of the original National Socialists to sexual mores, fascist domination imagery matching poorly with (psuedo-)scientific ideals of careful genetic control. And the many examples of Nazi imagery being appropriated after WW2 for fetish effect.

do it. I'm even offering German help (translating and/or pronouncing) if you need it

Felicitas

Not gunna talk you out of it. Fuck nazis and their modern knock offs forever

TimeChaser

Great video, as always. Design geekdom and world building are both among my favorite types of geekery. I think the Nazis in Film video could work, so long as "Nazi" is not interchangeable with "German". My social worker is from modern Germany, and she protects me from Nazis all the time. She's awesome like that. It might be worth specifically mentioning in the video that much of formerly imperialist Europe is now more democratic then we are in the States.

I don't care for the Bay films either, but I have to admit those films do effectively convey the origins of the two sides from the G1 cartoon: the "working class" robots built for factory/construction (the Autobots) and the robots built for military purposes (the Decepticons).

Joe G

But Stitch has the small light-coloured ovals in the middle of those big black eyes. Maybe they're supposed to be perpetual light reflections or something, but they effectively act like pupils.

Joe G

or which one of our presidents was most like a Nazi (my money is on a toss up between Andrew Jackson and General Grant)

Don Bright

i keep re-editing this, there are a thousand reasons not to do nazis... but if you are going to do nazis so just at least put in the soviet film "ordinary fascism"

Don Bright

If it means I get to listen to you talk about Der Fuehrer's Face again then shut up and take my money.

This video was great, and despite myself being a big Transformers fan who the Michael Bay movies sorts of mangle a portion of my theoretical soul, I give those movies slightly a little more credit now. Also, I sort of want a Nazi video now that you mention it... So many good movies of Americans fighting Nazis. The U.S could use more of that right now.

Michael C. Johnson AKA Riggleton

I'm still hoping you make a video about the illuminati

Came out of nowhere, but awesome. I love it. I can't wait for Nazi vid and talking about Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds.

Bardcraft

A video about fictional Nazis would interesting. Just don't go insane making it.

Barry Donnelly

Also yes please do the Nazis! It'll give you an excuse to talk about Mel Brooks!

I agree with like 99% of this. However, I disagree that pupil-less eyes always denotes danger. Most of the time yes, but not exclusively. For example, Stitch from Lilo & Stitch. He has large black eyes with no pupils, which helps establish his alien-ness, and his unpredictable nature (you can't tell what he's looking at exactly and thus don't know exactly what he'll do next), but it also doesn't take away his inherent cuteness and hugability.

If you do a loose cannon on Nazis you'll have to get through millions of WWII and Holocaust movies. Why don't you make a shorter essay about Cabaret, about its influence, portrayal of the rise of the Nazis etc.

Literal, actual Nazis? All your fans will support you on that. Which one is our new president?

Jason James

I don't particularly mind which video you do next, as long as you have fun researching it. I feel like Allied media versions of Nazis, especially those aimed at a family / general audience, tend to make them more goofy or at least less threatening like in 'Allo 'Allo...or they are just a vague faceless threat to loom over characters like in Sound of Music (idk if you ever got 'Allo 'Allo aired in the US)

Talk you out of it??? Bitch I'm egging you on!

⭐️Galactic Pretty Boy, Tommy⭐️

Make a video on whatever interests you! I have been fascinated by pretty much every topic you've decided to do, so I know I'll at least be watching no matter what!

Taylor

Could just as easily be cathartic, though, and I think it is apparent that there are conservatives who do watch Lindsay, and who do think that Nazis are just unreal/fictional/could never happen again. Sometimes visual entertainment that makes people think works better than huge long essays that they won't read. Already my Facebook is full of people who deny that Nazis could ever be a problem again, and that there are only 200 Nazis in the world ever so they could never cause a problem.

Maybe you could do one about how fictional US presidents are portrayed in media?

Benjamin

Well, doing such a video would probably just make you feel really bad, and while I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting, would the good done be sufficient to offset that? I mean, I wouldn't *think* that you'd change many minds with it (not that it's not good and such, just I think you'd be preaching to the converted, to a point), so really you'd just be upsetting yourself for little actual gain in terms of education/perspectives. On top of that, speaking entirely selfishly, I'd rather you do a video you enjoy doing than one you don't - they're always more fun to watch. So, there's that angle, although how much it matters is obviously something you'd need to decide.

Allan

Please do the Nazis

Haley Hrncir

You're not going to get an argument on it from me...if ever the Nazis were topical...

LOL The Nazis? I'm down ^U^

I'm not talking you out of it especially if you cover the failed sitcom pilot

I won't talk you out of it: 'member Sound of Music and Bedknobs & Broomsticks?
