In which our favorite opera ghost gets splooshed in the face with multiple vats of acid.

That was part of of a taped concert of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music for his birthday.

I'm sure Part 2 of this video has already been recorded, and I wish we'd get to take a look at the actors (both stage and movie) that have portrayed the Phantom, because I really, REALLY, want someone to acknowledge that Antonio Banderas was the Phantom at one point in time! And I feel like I'm crazy, because I seem to be the only person that remembers this, but I swear, way back in 1998 Antonio Banderas was the Phantom in a recorded stage production of Phantom! I remember because I saw a part of it on PBS when they were doing one of their fundraising drives, and the 1998 Phantom of the Opera starring Antonio Banderas and Sarah Brightman was the concert they decided to air for it.

A full review of Phantom of the Paradise would be loads of fun.

I like the Lon Chaney version better. That was a true classic. One of the first two Universal Monsters. First being The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

omg the '43 version has a novelization?? I mean, that does explain a lot. Cutting the dad angle only made it more confusing... but no less creepy if we're being honest.

Ohhhh I've been looking forward to this... wonderful analysis! My recollection of why Claudin isn't in Christine's life is that he abandoned her and her mother when she was a baby, in order to pursue his career as a violinist. This was told to Anatole by Christine's aunt. Granted, I read all this in a very tattered kiddie novelization back in 3rd grade, but I'm fairly certain my memory's good.

So I guess the trend of sexing up monsters to make them appeal to the ladies goes back farther than I though. Damn.

The DePalma version is a real gem. Can't understand why the NFR hasn't selected it for preservation yet. smh

I'm not even a Phantom fan but this is fascinating. I loved that video Paw and Elisa did about Phantom of the Paradise way back when too. (It had sock puppets!) I'm glad you explained your dislike of the in-plot dis-figuration change, it makes a lot of sense. I can remember reading an essay you wrote about being a fan girl back when you were a teenager on fanfiction.net (where I met one of my oldest friends too) but I don't remember you saying which version was the one that won you over.
