I watched every Disney Channel Original Movie

Wow. Please let me know what you think, if there are any problems. I hope you enjoy it!

I think my personal favorites are Twitches and Smart House. I'm a little bummed that you rated Twitches sorta-mid and I understand that humor is subjective but for me, every joke lands and I find it the funniest of the dcoms. Just wanted to give it some love, as well as to the fantastic comedic performances of Jennifer Robertson and Arnold Pinnock, whom you didn't mention.

So much of the youtube "reviewing old kids' media" genre is basically "remember this old movie, it was weird huh!" and basically summarizes the movie with some added quips. It's good if you want to get the gist of a movie that probably isn't worth sitting down and actually watching, and maybe getting a burst of nostalgia, but the youtuber of this genre usually isn't transforming the experience in a meaningful way. What I appreciate most about this video (and the first two installments of the Big Joel Disney Trilogy) is that the commentary feels intentional in a way that transcends the media he is reviewing. It allows you to understand the original media in a way that you can't just do by watching it unless you sit down and do a lot of thinking. It's its own type of media. Also each segment is only a few minutes so no one movie feels like it overstays its welcome. I can get my supermegadose of Joel without any one piece of content getting stale. If a movie is boring and there's not much to say about it, not much will be said about it. Many others in this genre will dedicate individual videos to individual pieces of media, which means at least 20 minutes talking about each one in the modern youtube video length economy.

bravo

Emily Murphy

Can't believe official Disney Channel originals began with Under Wraps and ended with Under Wraps 2. What a way to wrap a bow on that pre Disney+ era.

Harry

Great video, my number one watch of Christmas. How did you know the zombie author was the name of the town? Even if I’d read more about history of zombies don’t think I would have remembered the name of the author of that book

Harry

absolutely losing it at Zendayas heart felt monologue about not mind controlling men with apps

Mimi

Awesome video you are so incredibly funny

Alex Aversa

noticed there’s a gayboy69420 and a NagitoKomaeda69420 in the patrons names list. loved the video. merry christmas!

🥶

Thank you so much for reminding me how much i loved HSM2. SO many iconic moments in that movie. It was the only HSM movie that I begged my parents to buy on DVD

Sajl Salim

hot damn what a drop, thanks joel

Mulligans

Thank you Huge Joel

All I want to say is that if you like that Proud Family song, you should listen to Exuma. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtuxw2KGukQ

As a European, these movies feel quintessentially American to me. We import American culture like the Avengers and Spongebob all the time, but Disney Channel Originals are definitely *not* widely watched here. They just seem to rely on too many untranslatable cultural markers, like American high school culture, homecoming balls, nerds & jocks, baseball, basketball, county fairs, cowboy ranches, showbiz, Thanksgiving, Halloween, etc etc. So by watching this video I feel like I have gained a new insight in the American condition. Themes I have broadly noticed are a focus on individualistic exceptionalism in the athletic or performative domain, in- and outgroups and (the negation of) stereotypes, spectacle and lingering patriarchal Christianity. Thank you Big Joel.

Teun

oh my goodness where is that balatro seeeeed

Guy Plumpinham

the original songs in Lemonade Mouth necessitate commentary

Mackenzie C

I really love the way you hardly ever talk about these movies entierly but just pick out things are are interesting or strange or bad, especially when they are unimportant little details like some jock boy being a fun character and that's all the movie gets. A beautiful and fun way to approach a project like this and I think it makes the video all the more fun and engaging.

Finn Starfox

Fuuuuuuuck. I just got to the Let It Shine review. I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry

Conner Keating

Christmas gift ultra-long video o__o

Gillian

The credit song ends with Under Wraps 2 but after that we still had Prom pact, The Slumber Party, The Naughty Nine, Big City Greens the Movie and Descendants 4!

Teun

I love your commitment to not talking about things in any particular order. It’s funny to me every time. I loved this video - it completely hypnotized me

Sarah M

It premiered on ABC, and is therefore not a DCOM

Mike Kachur

Wait.....why didn't you cover My Date With The President's Daughter?

Stokes

Calling it right now, he and quinton are gonna collab on a video reviewing every Nickelodeon Original Movie

Mike Kachur

I really appreciate your very genuine insight into movies like these; it's really rare to see someone seriously critically approach something like tv movies for children as works that have thematic intent, art made by people, just as worthy of being engaged with and considered as any other films.

Holly L

Can’t wait for your follow-up in 2050 :)

Alice

Hi Mr. Joel, apologies for the delay as I am slowly making my way through this epic of a video, but I am once again compelled to point out a possible small error. At 4:36:23 you say “aside from the gay, Under Wraps is a pretty good movie,” you are in fact reviewing Under Wraps 2 in this section. Part of me can believe this is intentional, but part of me fears the worst.

Josef Oliver

However, NITPICK: At 3:48:58, you suggest that Horse Sense has the only direct reference to religion in any DCOM. But, earlier, in your review of "Tru Confessions", you show a clip of the Shia Lebouf character saying "[everybody makes mistakes] except God, right?" A major blunder and a true stain on an otherwise unimpeachable video.

Conner Keating

One thing I love about your vids is how you never shy away from engaging with the banal and kitsch products of our culture. It’s kind of comforting but there is also something worthwhile in it. Really liked this video. CANT WAIT FOR THE MEGALOPOLIS VID

polkadotsandstars

Hey! I skipped ahead to the BCG section, I found it kind of odd that you described Cat in the Hat as a kind of wish fulfillment story but (unless I’m mistaken) didn’t use that term. Not saying you should go back and edit that part (esp since it’s such bc a long vid and it’s been up for a day already) but it feels slightly lacking that you describe it as a fantasy without using the term for what specific kind of fantasy it is.

Mike Kachur

The "Phantom of the Megaplex" bit is transcendent. Something that could only ever come 3 and a half hours into a 6 hour video about DCOMs. There was pure joy in my heart for the whole duration of the two minute joke

Conner Keating

really loved this but honestly how am I supposed to respect Huge Joel as a dcom critic and authority figure if he gets the name of 'start of something new' from hsm so wrong when discussing its return in the slumber party hangover movie segment. great video and love the style!

Gabrielle Fullam

a longie!

Erin Dugan

I am absolutely losing my mind at Selena Gomez & The Scene's "Love You Like A Love Song" surfacing in a ukulele cover in How To Build a Better Boy - truly a baffling connection

Gabrielle Fullam

I watched this whole thing and was happy with all of it! Sorry it was hard to make!

Starkey Johnston

I can't get enough of videos like this. Watching your mental journey as you go through it is just magnificent and feels like I'm connecting with a human and I'm happy to be alive

Emma S

I always knew you were smart, but you proved yourself to be an Intellectual with this one. Recognizing the brilliance of both Sharpay and Pixel Perfect???? You really outdid yourself with this one.

Ainjel

SIX HOURS??? What a treat eeeheheh

kelswell

If you have it, it might be helpful to add timestamps in the discripton. Like if I want to remember a Huge Joel Take on my favourite movie I am not going to rewatch the 6 hour video

RäuberOppsenplotz

lolol, i was too quick to correct you!! my bad, loving the video so far

Matthew Muldoon

during the christmas again segment, you got it wrong about the yes guy, the simpsons straight up stole that joke from the old jack benny radio show, here's a clip from the jack benny christmas special https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA_r1Ynl4Ls , its kind of a classic joke and if the simpsons can get away with it so can christmas again

Matthew Muldoon

thank you! genuinely appreciate the nitpicking! I figure I will allow only one more thing like this to happen before I re-record lol

Big Joel

Gigantic Joel

Shan Bro

Hello I know you spent a long time uploading this but as a Patron I must point out there is a misspoken line no one caught at 1:13:19. You said Zenon had to “get back to Earth to save the day” but she is in fact going to Earth, she has to get back to the space station to save the day. I want a retake of this line and for the video to be fully re-exported and re-uploaded. Will update if I find more.

Josef Oliver

Hey, new Quinton Reviews video. Nice.

nomanstom

Holy shit. 6 hours of big Joel talking about nonsense. I say this without a shred of sarcasm, THANK YOU

Owen Carscadden

If you like those animal-based DCOMs I would highly Disney-produced 60's movie and perfect masterpiece: That Darn Cat. Watched it with my wife like a week ago and it's awesome

David Taylor

six hours.. gagged

Regina Cuddeback

Deney T

Sarah DeFrancisco

I am speechless, what an incredible undertaking

Evelyn Alvarado

I was super excited to see that you posted a new video and then I saw that it was 6 hours long and I'm shook.

nico

THE GOAT

Jame

6 hours? This is gonna be a good one

Mark fas

I was wondering when this was going to hit Nebula, and then I saw the time stamp and thought that might be why? Thrilled about the length. It’s like you know I’m wrapping Christmas presents and need something to watch/listen to while all the podcasts are on break for two weeks.

Lizzie Cross

yippee!

Chris Hill

I loved the “brink” fanfic. Also the editing style in this vid is so perfect! The reaction shots instead of recordings were so funny!

oh yeah

holy moly

Jake

ooooh

Alison

Tomo Reynolds

lmao why is Spring Break in December?

Wes

I guess it’s just Safari. Safari will no longer play embedded youtube videos from Patreon.

Wes

Also, great Thumbnail once again. Youre hitting it out of the park with the resent ones

GallyGaxylly

I'm alone at home and was kinda feeling it. THEN JOEL DROPS A 1/4th DAY LONG VIDEO and I know I'll be fine

A Parent Lee (long lost brother of Stan Lee, RIP)

Letterboxed says I've watched 112 movies this year, just a few shy of this whole project, you mad man

Taylor Burch

Six hours of Joel! It's a Christmas miracle 🥹

General Crisp

It says “sign in to confirm you’re not a bot.” I AM signed in. And whenever I try clicking it just redirects to the YouTube home page

Wes

I fucking burst out laughing while seeing the 6 hour length. Kind of thought that this was going to be a video on lillys channel, based on her letterboxd history. But yeah, great surprise

GallyGaxylly

Mr. Joel. I have Christmas movies to rewatch. How am I supposed to fit this in before January?

Xavier Marican

Did the video already get taken down? Or is my YouTube just being an asshole?

Wes

WHOOOOOO!

oh yeah

Lets f******ing go!!!!
