Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I still think a real newscast, done correctly, can bring in viewers.
60 Minutes has been a top-rated show for decades, and that is because, up until Bari Weiss got there, 60 Minutes did real journalism.
No flying graphics, no fancy camera moves, and no lower thirds, yet almost every week, 60 Minutes ranked near the top of the ratings.
But many media outlets don't think that news can work, and they want to make their shows look more like an influencer on YouTube.
Look at the Fox O&O in Houston. They have decided to cancel their Noon newscast and replace it with something called "Chattin’ With Chelsea!"
The station bills host Chelsea Edwards as "Your daytime bestie" in a promo for the show (see video above).
Edwards at one point did news, but has transitioned over to whatever this is. She says, ""It fills me with an indescribable joy to transition from reporting news to creating content that is not only enjoyable but insightful."
It is hard to think that KRIV has dropped news for a show like this, but then again, this station has really given up on doing real journalism a long time ago.
I don't think any station is going to beat YouTube by trying to put YouTube on TV. Real journalism can work, but sadly, this Fox O&O punted on that a long time ago.
