Denver News Director Out

Insiders tell FTVLive that this Denver News Director is gone, the job is already posted, and there has been little transparency.

Sources in the Mile High City tell FTVLive that the News Director at Telemundo's O&O in Denver, KDEN, parted ways last week.

Griselle Sierra is gone from the station.

"No email announcement, very little transparency," said a station insider to FTVLive.

NBC/Universal has posted the ND job with a salary range: $125,000 - $145,000. They also add that a bonus is available, but don't say what the bonus is for.

One time, I was offered a News Director job, and they wanted to include a bonus that was based on saving money. In other words, if we came in under budget, I would be given a bonus.

I took the job but turned down the bonus offer. I did not want to be tempted to try and save money on news coverage. Imagine a big story that should have been assigned 3 or 4 crews, but if I only assigned 1 or two crews, I could have made bonus money.

I told the General Manager that I did not want to be paid money for cutting back on news coverage or something similar.

The GM said that I could be leaving thousands of dollars on the table by turning down this bonus. I replied that I never wanted dollars to dictate how we cover news.

For me, it was never about the money.

As for a News Director job paying just $125,000 a year in a market like Denver, it seems low. I don’t know what the bonus money being offered is for, but I hope it is not for staying way under budget. That should not be a goal in practicing journalism.
