And Here Comes The Apology

I bet you can name more than a few TV news people who have been fired for a post they made on social media.

I'm sure you can name another handful, who have posted something asinine on social media that has lead to blowback.

Now, how many people can you name in TV news that have landed a new job, got a raise, or major recognition for a post they made on social media. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Before you hit the publish button you really need to ask yourself three questions.

-What would my Mom think about this post?

-What would my boss, or my boss's boss think about this post?

-Will this post end up on FTVLive?

If you can clear those hurdles, then hit publish.

But, this is an example of former TV news people who still don't get it. Let me explain.

On Monday, there was a deadly crash in Waukesha County (outside Milwaukee). Former WTMJ Meteorologist Brian Gotter was stuck in traffic at the scene.

For some reason, the WTMJ news crew decided to interview him.

Gotter was clearly excited to be back on TV with this smiley facebook post despite someone dying.

Despite this being a fatal, the WTMJ news crew was also all smiles.

The comments were - as you’d expect - negative about his and the WTMJ news crew's tone deaf behavior.

About 5 hours later, Gotter took the post down and replaced it with the following so-called apology.

It is somewhat confusing why WTMJ interviewed him hours later, when in the story they interviewed the man who actually witnessed the crash, got out of his vehicle, started working to free the driver and stayed there til paramedics arrived.

Apparently Gotter didn’t see the crash but was stuck in traffic just walked around and took pictures.

So, why put him in the story?

Also, before you snap a smiling selfie with someone, make sure that you have full context of the situation.

Yes, the post made Gotter look like a fool, but it didn't help the rep of WTMJ either.

Think before you post.

Comments

Agreed. That said, why did you post an article about “The Sex Positions that Went Viral in 2025” that has nothing to do with journalism? Your original post here is spot on, but your decision to then run something that’s lacking judgment on your own is disappointing.
