In TF2, you actually got a special cosmetic if you coached enough players. The reason why coaching just doesn't work anymore is that you are technically a spectator player who takes up a server slot meaning you can't join a server that's full. Valve's official matchmaking servers also prevent players from being able to connect to them outside of the matchmaker itself and since the coaching system doesn't use the matchmaker, it immediately boots you from whatever official server a new player is trying to get you to join. (which is where a majority of new players go before uninstalling due to how broken everything is) If it actually brings you into a server, it will probably be some really weird custom map on a community server with a bunch of assets and plugins you are forced to download which can take either 10 seconds or 10 minutes.
