I never thought of the peas scene that way haha that's an interesting way to look at it πŸ₯Ή I love his family they are the best really very supportive of Subaru no matter what.

This episode made me so emotional I really wish Subaru would be able to make a visit at least to his parents to put them at ease 😭

Subaru's dad reminds me of Ichigo's dad from Bleach lol. Both of them are so funny. Glad to see Subaru's parents after such a long time though. As one guy on twitter put it perfectly: "This scene alone is like a mirror for Subaru's psychological structure and the way his family deals with emotional "burdens". Because: The peas are not just peas. They stand for everything in life that is unpleasant, embarrassing or simply painful (weaknesses, fears, imperfections, mistakes, ...). And Subaru has exactly that in him - and never really knew where to put any of it. The fact that they just mix the peas with rice means, metaphorically speaking, instead of actually handling the burden, they cover it up with "good" stuff... something Subaru has often done: He hides his self-loathing behind humor. He covers up his insecurities with loudness or grandstanding... He mixes the bad with the good in the hope of not having to feel it anymore. And yet: his mother doesn't force him to eat the peas, while his father laughs it off. The family remains warm and loving - despite everything. That shows: In this family, Subaru never had to live up to all expectations. He could have been loved even with all those peas." I don't think I could've ever said it any better myself, nor did I ever think about this scene as deep like this. It's clear that Subaru had some bad memories or something with school that made him this way. He even tries to comfort himself by saying "I'll never make it in time now, there's no helping it" as if to say that there's nothing he can do about it now, pushing whatever the problem is aside. It's worth noting also that his father asks him multiple times if he has a girlfriend. I don't think it was fully just to know if he has a girlfriend, but someone else to rely on, to help him when he needs it. It's beautiful how, even if he's not supposed to know this is a trial and all traces of his time together with Emilia and others, he still manages to remember Emilia and hear her voice, even though he's not supposed to in this state. But that's just how strong of an impression she left on him. And thus, the pain he felt subsides. Until later when his dad reminds him of how he looks, it happened with the old guy before too, as soon as he remember of how he looks, the pain comes back. Until now. He then remembers Emilia and now not only does he hear her, but also sees her. And then the pain is gone. "You're definitely his kid!" These words really show how expectations from parents can crush their child. This is what Subaru was feeling. He needed the feel to live up to his parents again and again and again until it literally was too much and he ended up giving up on everything. So that's why when he was being told that he even looks like his parents, the pain would flare up. It was the same with school. He was expected to be good at this and that but not everyone is the same. It's why Emilia's voice saved him. Emilia accepted Subaru for who HE was, not knowing his parents or measuring him up to them. And just like everyone else seeing him as someone resembling their parents, he expected his parents to think like that too. He expected his parents to want him to be like that, but it's clear that they didn't care. You can even see it when his dad says that he thinks school isn't everything, saying that he doesn't need to go to school, meaning that he doesn't need to live up to his parents who probably did go to school. And now for the mom, she clearly sees through Subaru's weaknesses, his inner fragility, whether it's his mistakes, the fact that he didn't really like mayonnaise all that much or the fact that Subaru always wanted to be like his father, she has seen and known all of it. Yet she has always accepted him for who he is. "You don't have to be totally the same as your dad. Just be Subaru". This is the moment he realizes that his parents really didn't care if he was like them or not. That he needs to be himself. He also finally got to say goodbye to his parents, even if they were fake. The saddest part is that the write wrote some amount of stuff relating to his parents, that in reality his parents are out there looking for him and they are sad that police hasn't had any clues in finding Subaru. Even worse is knowing that there is a story about an alternative timeline where he didn't get summoned to the other world and he got over his insecurities and trauma on his own and managed to live out a good life in Japan. Subaru is one of the best characters of all time for me, if not the best and this episode truly makes him shine. Sorry for the mega long post, but this is my favorite episode still of all of Re:Zero. It really shows his character, his flaws and everything else and how he was able to finally overcome them and become an even better person.

One of the best episodes of Re:Zero Subaru struggles are so relatable its not some trauma or bullying, death of parents. It’s just this teenager dealing anxiety and depression. One my reasons Subaru became one of my favorite characters His Season 1 meltdowns and terrible decisions made some drop the show entirely. But what initially seemed like bad writing was actually a devastatingly accurate portrait of a broken teenager desperately trying to prove he's special. Subaru's cringeworthy behavior - the arrogant speeches, the white-knighting, the emotional outbursts - all stem from one fundamental trauma: he couldn't accept being ordinary. Also the author stated Since Subaru left home without saying goodbye to his mother and never came back, his parents think Subaru ran away from home, specially due to the situation he was, the police can't do anything because there's no lead to find him, not even if he's alive, the only people left with hopes he's alive are his parents who still look for him every day as Subaru's father try to support his now depressed wife. And do you want to know what's the worst part? The author have confirmed that Subaru's parents are so incredible to the point if he had stayed in his world, they would manage to help him through this phase of his life and overcome his problems, he would have would have finished highschool, go to a university, where he would get a girlfriend, get a decent job, he would be happily married to a nice wife and live happily ever after. That's the future he lost by going to another world.
