Thinking about merchandise

Hey everyone! So an opportunity has come up for me to once again release a plushie. This time, however, I would not be doing it through Makeship but another company.

However, I'm having some hesitancy. I got really burnt on the first plush campaign, and while I know I'm a bigger channel, I just don't have total confidence about the idea. I think the issue to me is that my brand is very much that I'm just "some guy." When you sell a plushie of a white guy with a beard, it could be Seth Rogan or Gordon Freeman. And I'm not sure people are inclined to go for merchandise of me because I am just not marketable on my own.

The other option is to do a vinyl figure, which would be good because I could very easily sell it with a pinboard and have it be very character-driven in posing. But I would need to sell about four times as many, and again I'm not confident merchandise of me is a good idea in the first place. Moreover, I feel strongly that plushies are more closely associated with my brand, and my fanbase is probably more likely to already own a plushie rather than a vinyl figure.

Maybe if I had a really really solid pitch, it would be more feasible to go through with this. Perhaps if I had a bootleg Garfield, or something off-brand iCarly, or just some general channel gag people would get. But I just can't think of any ideas, and I feel without a very good gimmick this would just be another failure sitting around my house.

What do you all think? As some of my biggest fans, do you think it would ever be a good idea to go for something like this again?

I'll tell you right now that if this is a success, later down the line this might open up the possibility of a collaboration with another brand that I'm a big fan of. But I likely can't talk more about that if I ever hope it to happen.

I don't collect plushies or a lot of merch in general, but I do have a terrible idea to suggest. If the issue is that a lot of "white guy youtubers" look the same in plushie form, perhaps make the head or face a photo of your own face, akin to Baby Spencer. So the body is just a regular plushie, but the face is this round fabric orb with your face on it. If it's too uncanny, perhaps the hair is normal plushie hair, or a hat is added.

To be honest I don’t collect plushies or figures and wouldn’t be very interested in either. The only thing I’d probably go for would be more exclusive content, or a fun-looking puzzle.

I also came here to say offbrand Quinton Garfield. It should have glasses and a ridiculous meme/nickelodeon shirt.

Honestly would buy anything but the idea of you creating offbrand characters is amazing. I would adore to have a conspiracy board quinton figure tho.

Jules

If you need help sourcing merch, creating mock-ups and managing the campaign I would be happy to help!! I have experience and a lot of enthusiasm ☺️ I think a plushie would be super fun and very on-brand for you. I feel like there’s lots of ways to do creative spins like have the plushie wear a knockoff Garfield hat and iCarly t-shirt!
