Chapter: 696 - Ending

Comments

Could Tala actually destroy/permanently damage the soul, or does it just mean she would maim it till the part on Zeme goes to the next work?

MinE

I have to assume it is due to politics. Specifically, the politics surrounding several dozen unkillable, unbelievably powerful beings all holding each other in check. Some sovreigns likely do want to assist the war, but many more are likely indifferent, and some may even side with the legion in the interest of 'healing' Zeme further. But open conflict between sovreign level being is probably what broke Zeme in the first place. Thus, any direct involvement at that level is likely forbidden, and perpetrators would earn swift reprisal for breaking the status quo.

Has it been explained why Sovereigns don't enter the fights with the Legion? They would be impacted as well if the legion won, no?

Tala has power over Iron(y)

Rafnar Caldon

Look on the bright side. Tala always intended to remove the columns. They'll just have to move up their own timeline with the hold wardens. I wonder if moving gated humans to a city, using something like a city stone to collect their magic, cleanse it, then redirected to holds for gateless use would be possible? It's kinda like the hold wardens, but only needs 1 regular paragon, and collects a city's worth of magic. AND it would be a step towards integration, which is the only way to really get over prejudice. It can't be an existing city stone, since this is not the time to weaken the cycling cities, and by that token, the cycling cities are not a viable refuge for the people displaced by this attack.

Love the chapter, but I do feel like it has way too much italics, especially in the first half. Felt like every paragraph had a word italicized, which felt pretty jarring to read.

Makes sense. The fighters will be best engaged in the moment and the right here. You need someone not in battle who can devote their attention to the bigger picture and new developments. Tala was also focused on gaining authority for herself, transitioning away from vestiges, and expected an “easy” campaign. I don’t think we ever saw her considering how badly it could go.

Tala was massively out maneuvered and her ability as a commander instead of a weapon should clearly be in question. She did well with preparation, but no plan stands first contact with the enemy and her judgment once the fight began was highly circumspect. I expect many of the millennial old beings would have been better commanders and she would have been better used as a weapon too point at specific threats. The legion has crippled arcane society and many have to believe Tala was complicit or at least compromised with her priorities as she's already made her stance about vestiges known. How can arcanes trust her judgment and priorities now?
