ALWAYS THERE
This series was taken the very first night I met Erna O’Hara in a small rented house in LA. After a couple hours of getting to know each other and laugh, swapping stories, etc., we really found ourselves in a creative groove. The moment we began shooting these black and white tub images, I knew we had magic.
I was never a big fan of lack and white photography, only finding my love of the camera after shooting color film. However, in the last few years I’ve really developed a new obsession with black and white. I have always been a history nerd, but I attribute my love of color to being Mexican and craving the passion of color. There is an old saying: “You see black and white with your mind, you see color with your gut.” Which makes sense, since we learned to see color to differentiate the berries that were edible versus the ones that will poison you. But I digress.
So, though I adore Erna’s skin tone and natural red hair, to capture this timeless beauty in black and white, and to capture all her quiet intensity and artsy greatness was powerful for the both of us. I absolutely love this series, it is one of my favorites of the last decade.
