COMPILATION: The Science of Ghosts and Ghost Hunting

A driver sees a strange light floating above an empty road at night. At the same time, a researcher works on a machine to contact the dead.

These events might seem unrelated, but they're part of humanity's long-standing interest in the supernatural. People have always been curious about ghosts, unexplained phenomena, and the possibility of life after death.

Even famous inventors like Tesla and Edison were interested in the paranormal. Their competition went beyond just creating new technologies - they also tried to build devices to communicate with spirits.

Throughout history, people have reported seeing shadow figures during sleep and mysterious lights in the sky. These experiences push the boundaries of what we understand about the world.

Scientists continue to study these phenomena, trying to find explanations. As we learn more about our past, we discover how closely linked science and the supernatural have always been.

I believe the universe is way stranger than we perceive it with our monkey brains.

Hi Andrea, thanks for your comment. I sometimes wonder if it’s a case of either them just looking in on their loved ones and/or not being ready to move on. Even though death is the only certainty in life ~ apart from taxes of course🤬 ~ it’s certainly not something that the vast majority are looking forward to. I’d had a discussion with my daughter a few years before she died. It was one of those conversation openers that I imagine most parents dread and can be caught out on, but the question, ‘Daddy, what happens to us when we die?’ is a bit of a poser coming from a 12 year old, especially since parents are automatically expected to have the answer, because Mum and Dad know everything. Right? I asked her to imagine that our body’s like a car inasmuch as it gets us from A to B and that the majority of things that go wrong with one’s car can be fixed. ‘But what would you do’ I asked her ‘if one day your ‘car’ was so broken down it couldn’t be fixed?’ She pondered this for a moment and then said, ‘ I’d have to get out and find another way of reaching my destination.’ Top marks. Smart girl for a 12 year old on a deep subject. She’d been going through a sort of ‘proto-goth’ phase the year she passed away and some of her poetry was a little on the dark side but that seems to be fairly common, although having said that, at the same time as she was proto-gothing, her stepsister who is just one week younger was more interested in horses, puppies and rabbits! As I’d said, my daughter returned visibly to both myself and my stepdaughter and later brought my father with her. The only member of the immediate family I’ve not experienced since their passing was my late mother and we had been so very close. But she’d suffered from very rapid early onset dementia ~ being sole carer for her and through covid too was not a lot of fun ~ and very quickly she had absolutely no idea who I was apart from being the man who looked after her. She didn’t recognise my brother and his family ~ to his understandable great distress ~ nor photos of my late daughter and she thought that my stepkids when they visited were a charming married couple and had I known them for long? She didn’t even know who the man was standing next to her ~ it was my late father ~ in their own wedding photos. That last one hurt a lot I can tell you. In fact the single name that she never lost sight of was that of her only sibling, an elder sister who had died from cancer in 1964. Truly, the mind works in mysterious ways! But the fact I’ve not experienced her presence since she passed away 4 years ago does make me wonder; what happens to the ‘spirit’ (for lack of a better term) of someone who’s mind had been almost totally wiped as their physical body failed? Can you not ‘pass on’ or, if you do, are you essentially unrecognisable to those who have gone before? Certainly a bit of a poser for anyone with an interest in such matters! All the best, David

That's the odd thing: I don't believe I ghosts (or maybe I don't want to acknowledge them) but I completely believe your story. I think when people die, they are not entirely "gone" and they linger to those closest to them. Maybe to see if they are okay. I also believe that those kind of encounters are benign.

Video may have killed the spirit radio star, but we can still hear him.

I watched and listened to this between visits of groups of trickertreaters

Ghosts are all mumbo jumbo to most people ~ until you’ve experienced one. I’ve always been ‘sensitive’ to such things and only found out why a few years ago when my mother told me that my paternal grandmother had been a spiritualist until her husband forbade her from involvement in such things. Like so many others, he had ‘got’ religion after his dreadful experiences in what they then called ‘The Great War’. So, that link explained to me why I’d seen and experienced some things that others hadn’t picked up on during my life. However, one real kicker for me occurred a few weeks after my teenage daughter had passed away. Around 3am one night, my bedroom door opened and in the gloom I could see what looked like a teenage girl in the doorway. This wasn’t a corner-of-the-eye moment, it was in front of me. Thinking it was my stepdaughter ~ who is one week younger than my own daughter ~ I said, ‘what’s the matter, dear?’ No reply. ‘Is everything ok?’ Still no reply; but the image faded and I then fell into the first deep relaxed sleep I’d had since my daughter had passed. I didn’t mention anything about this during that day, up until the point in the evening where my stepdaughter suddenly said, ‘Daddy, I think Emily visited me last night. My bedroom door opened and there was what looked like a teenage girl standing there, but I wasn’t frightened. I just felt very calm and peaceful. In fact I think she’s been with me most of today ~ but now I’ve said this, it feels different and I think she’s gone.’ My daughter visited me again about a month or so later one evening when I was feeling down. I didn’t see her but I could sense her presence. In fact, I’m certain she’d brought my late father with her. Why? Because I could suddenly smell the hair lotion he’d used when I was a kid in the 1960’s ~ and that product hadn’t been made for at least 25 years. I’ve never been the sort who goes out and seeks such things but there are too many other experiences I’ve had over the years for me to dismiss and whilst I’m sure some folk will attempt to rationalise these experiences, I don’t really care. I was there ~ and they weren’t.

What's been going on....I miss getting an episode every week. It's just all complications now. Did you guys run out of material? I love the show or I wouldn't be complaining

Steven Chell

First, thank you for all the podcasts! I miss Hecklefish's snark, but they're still great. As for the compilation, well, it's great too! I've had my fair share of weird experiences and could tell you some stories that would send chills down your spine (I will never touch a Ouija board again!). I've only experienced sleep paralysis and a shadow figure once, but it was plenty. Yeah, freaking terrifying. Certain I've seen at least one ghost, possibly another, though it could have been a dream - I swear I saw Santa on Christmas Eve too, so.... Anywho, great job and thanks for the wonderful episodes. Peace!

Pete Mitchell

I listen to you EVERY night to go to sleep. Hahaha Was actually looking for a bed time episode as I typed this.

MIKΞL

Ok so I had to stop mid video because I too have had encounters with shadow people, I’ve had these throughout my life since I was a teenager. I won’t go into specifics but I do know that this happens when you are facing a lot of distress in waking hours. I just had one not too long ago I’d say a couple months. I woke up from a dream or at least I thought I did and I wasn’t in my body because I was standing looking at my living room door, that’s where I saw it, it was short and bulky and I was definitely scared at that moment I knew I was dreaming so I started trying to wake myself up my husband was laying next to me asked if I was ok, in my mind in my dream I was yelling for help I must of been actually yelling it. It is very scary to have that happen.

Stardyncer
