File format preference survey
Added 2025-08-20 20:08:59 +0000 UTCThis time, I uploaded two versions: one in WEBP and one in JPG. Iβd like you to compare them and let me know which format you think is better. :)
π JPG (JPEG)
Pros: Highly compatible (works on all web, apps, and devices), reasonable file size, strong for photos
Cons: No lossless compression, quality degrades with repeated compression
π WEBP
Pros: Smaller file size than JPG at the same quality, supports lossless compression and transparency (alpha channel), developed by Google for web optimization
Cons: Limited support on older browsers and some tools, can be slightly slower to process than JPG
π In short, WEBP is better for web optimization, JPG is better for broad compatibility.
Comments
WEBP has a (significantly) better compression rate, but it is a proprietary format that is not supported by all programmes and has (and this has been known for some time without any action being taken) highly critical security vulnerabilities. What makes WEBP particularly questionable is that it can be βdisguisedβ as a JPG without affecting its display in browsers. This should give pause for thought, because it means that even after checking the file extension, you can unwittingly download and open images that pose a security risk. It must have been deliberately programmed this way to make this possible.
