Aw man.. The EN dub has impressed and made me laugh a couple of times so far, but this episode was just handled terribly. I can only assume it's partly because the English language doesn't lend itself to this particular kind of drama, but it's like they had a completely different conversation here. And I'm not just talking about the ambiguity that is inherent to the Japanese language and that can make it very difficult to translate to a language as concrete as English. I understand, for example, why the localisation team wasn't able to do a line like 「お前は俺がどんなに...」, which very much reads like a half confession, justice. But what I don't understand, is that they also just left out stuff that wasn't ambiguous at all. In English, Reki says "you are freaking me out", while in Japanese, he says skating with Adam/like Adam does *scares* him. He isn't freaked out by Langa. He's traumatised by his experience. And perhaps the biggest question mark: the episode ends with him saying "I thought you were different. Such a stupid mistake" in English, while in Japanese, he says "you and I are no longer a good match", which is also the title of the episode(!). I can only hope the dub doesn't stray from the source material to this extent again.

I always thought what set Reki off that he lumped Langa in with Adam at the end of their spat was when Langa defended his decision by calling Adam a great skater - which from Reki’s pov just confirms all of his insecurities, because it looks like Langa is breaking their promise and leaving him behind because he found an “actually great skater” to skate with. And that’s without mentioning the whole “so it’s okay that he put me in the hospital if he can skate better than me?” Kind of thoughts.
