Technically he can see people's faces, it just that they don't make sense for him and can't recognise people by their faces. This is represented by the go pieces and the shogi pieces, but in the novels they mention he can see individual parts of the face (like the eyes or the ears), it just that his mind can´t combine them. He is supossedly really good at telling if people are lying to him.
