If I remember correctly, Ranma 1/2 was one of the pioneers of romance polygons and harems in anime/manga. Before, it was usually just a love triangle at most. It was also a satire of the whole "Martial Arts" craze in manga at the time. That is why they study "Anything Goes" martial arts. Another thing it was parodying was the three generations view of 'masculinity' itself. With Ranma, Genma, and [spoilers redacted] representing the 'current' teen (for the 80s), their parents (Genma) and another character who represents the dirty old man (if you know, you know). The original had a lot more of Genma belittling Ranma for being a girl. I remember one of the scenes in the original where Genma says, "Rama, you sound like a girl!" and chucks Ranma into a pond.
