I kinda think you didn’t pull the correct information together including what Jinshi himself believes about who he is. I don't mean this is the spoiler-y sense, I mean it from the pov that you didn't hear what they said. But anyway. What I really want to say is that my impression of this episode was that this showed one of the ways that women can struggle to survive when the deck is stacked against them. I also agree with you that they were trying to make a connection between the original Royal Mother and Maomao. However, my realization was limited to the old shrine caretaker's acceptance of Maomao was because of her wisdom, which was how the Queen Royal was also described. The caretaker took no note of the fact that Maomao was not in fact color blind, but being able to figure out how to successfully proceed through the shrine without that trait, was still equivalent.
