So, unfortunately, the relationship stigma in Japan is pretty universal to anyone in entertainment-- or at least I can say as much is particularly true of women (I don't know nearly as much about mens' side of such stuff, other than that it's probably just as bad for kpop idols). Just dating, period, is tantamount to a "scandal," because of some pretty gross (and, frankly, very sexist) views on such things that really haven't evolved nearly as much as the should. Idol culture is, of course, the worst of it, where even the *hint* of dating is even made a *breach of contract*, because their entire *industry* is all about capitalizing on extremely parasocial ick that the corpos running said idols will feed into as much as possible, regardless of what harm that may mean for the talents. It's extremely exploitative, suffice to say, and it bleeds into every corner of their entertainment sphere as a weird pressure of unrealistic *expectations* that's all just very yikes. Granted, it's better now than it used to be, particularly for established personalities whose career can survive the hit, but like... more than a small number of people have *died* as a direct result of such parasocial cultural norms, and countless more lives have been ruined by such exploitation. Which is just... really unpleasant. To say nothing of how unsettling the whole idol culture thing of marketing what is often still just teenagers as romanticized objects of affection is for every *other* reason. Not that I'm any expert, to be fair. It's all a bunch of half-remembered information from some old conversations with people waaaay more knowledgeable than myself. But like, even then, the quote that stuck with me was "whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse." So, yeah. Not a great state of affairs. Hopefully, my impression is a bit out of date, and things aren't *quite* so dire anymore; but, well... not gonna hold my breath on that one.
