You had me thinking a couple of things from your commentary. About the motivations and plots swirling around the back palace, there is a common thread, and that is, there may be someone giving people ideas. The back palace inhabitants focus on being a concubine, whom the emperor visits, giving him a child, especially if it's a boy, and eventually becoming empress. It eliminates a lot of the normal considerations of life and makes those goals take on existential importance to these women. I think Shin wouldn't so driven and obsessed if she weren't stuck in the back palace. What then if people are shown a way to effectuate their feelings or goals? Someone, you might say, is taking advantage of the situation as it already exists in the back palace. There may be exceptions, but someone might be orchestrating this rash of events (the motivation for the attack on Jinshi is more direct and yet the motivations don't seem as clear).
