its less a matter of changing the animals to something the kids would recognize, and more that they have never seen any livestock or predators. The gray robes and the orphans have never left the church. So any animal is hard for them to imagine. On top of that, they don't have the concept of anthropomorphism in this world. No one can imagine an animal standing on two legs and talking.
